罗波安住在耶路撒冷，他在犹大建造了多座设防城。他修筑了伯利恒、以坦、提哥亚、伯．夙、梭哥、亚杜兰、迦特、玛利沙、西弗、亚多莱音、拉吉、亚西加、琐拉、亚雅仑、希伯仑；这些都是犹大和便雅悯境内的设防城。

希西家王在位第十四年，亚述王西拿基立上来攻击犹大所有的设防城，占据了它们。犹大王希西家派人往拉吉去见亚述王说：“我有罪了，请你离我回去吧，你们加于我的处分，我必承当。”于是亚述王罚了犹大王希西家九千公斤银子和九百公斤金子。

“你们应当在犹大宣告，在耶路撒冷传扬，说：‘要在境内吹号。’高声呼叫，说：‘你们要集合起来，我们要进到坚固的城里去！’

巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒率领他的全军，以及他统治的地上各国各族，攻打耶路撒冷和周围一切城镇的时候，从耶和华那里有话临到耶利米，说：

耶和华使他们在以色列人面前溃乱，约书亚在基遍大大地击杀他们，沿着伯．和仑的上坡路追赶他们，击打他们，直到亚西加和玛基大。他们从以色列人面前逃跑，正在下伯．和仑斜坡的时候，耶和华从天上降大冰雹在他们身上，一直到亚西加，打死他们；被冰雹打死的，比以色列人用刀杀死的还多。

一个是耶末王，一个是拉吉王，

拉吉、波斯加、伊矶伦、

他在犹大山地建造城市，又在树林中建造一些营寨和瞭望楼。

拉吉的居民哪！要用快马套车，这就是锡安子民（“子民”原文作“女子”）罪恶的开端；因为以色列的过犯，都在你那里找到了。

他们必把你围困在你的各城里，直到在你的全境内你所倚靠高大和坚固的城墙都被攻陷；他们必把你围困在耶和华你的神赐给你的全地的各城里。

那时，犹大各城的人和耶路撒冷的居民，都必去哀求他们烧香供奉的神，只是在他们遭难的时候，这些神却完全不能拯救他们。

我们为什么坐着不动呢？你们要集合起来，我们要进入坚固的城里去，在那里灭亡吧！因为耶和华我们的神要我们灭亡，又把毒水给我们喝，因我们得罪了耶和华。

拉伯沙基回去，发觉亚述王正在攻打立拿，因为他曾听说亚述王已拔营离开拉吉。
