『我指着永活的我來起誓，永恆主發神諭說，猶大王約雅敬的兒子哥尼雅雖是我右手上的印章，我還要將你摘下來，交於那些尋索你性命的人的手，和你所懼怕的人手中，交於巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒的手，和迦勒底人手中。我必將你和生你的母親拋擲出去、到別國之地，你們不是生在那裏，卻必死在那裏。但他們心裏所仰慕要回去之地、他們卻不得回去。』哥尼雅這個人是被鄙視、被摔碎的陶瓦小像、無人喜悅的器皿麼？為甚麼他被拋擲，他和他的後裔都被丟到素不認識之地呢？

猶大王約雅斤出來投降巴比倫王，他和他母親、臣僕、大臣和內侍都出來；巴比倫王便拿住他，那是巴比倫王在位第八年。巴比倫王將永恆主之殿的一切寶物和王宮的寶物都從那裏取出來，又把以色列王所羅門在永恆主殿堂所造的一切金器都砍壞了，正如永恆主所說過的。他又使耶路撒冷眾人、眾大臣、和一切有力氣英勇的人、共一萬名、連一切匠人、鐵匠、都去過着流亡的生活；除了國中之民極貧寒的以外、沒有剩下的。他使約雅斤流亡到巴比倫去；也使王母王妃和王的內侍、以及國中的權貴、都從耶路撒冷流亡到巴比倫。一切有力氣的人、七千名、和匠人鐵匠一千人、這一切能作戰的勇士、巴比倫王都使他們流亡到巴比倫去。

約雅斤登極的時候十八歲；他在耶路撒冷作王三個月零十天；他行了永恆主所看為壞的事。到了年頭、尼布甲尼撒差遣了人將約雅斤帶到巴比倫，連同永恆主殿裏珍寶的器皿都帶去；他就立約雅斤的叔叔西底家作王來管理猶大和耶路撒冷。

就是巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒使猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅、和猶大耶路撒冷一切顯貴的人、從耶路撒冷流亡到巴比倫去時候所沒有拿去的器皿：

並且從你本身出的、就是你所生的、子孫中、也必有人被拿去，在巴比倫王宮裏當太監。』

巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒使猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅和猶大的首領跟匠人、鐵匠、從耶路撒冷流亡去，給帶到巴比倫：這事以後，永恆主給我看個異象：看哪，有兩筐無花果，放在永恆主的殿堂前。

耶戶抬頭看那窗戶，說：『誰擁護我？誰？』有兩三個太監在眺望着他。

我必將猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅和那些到巴比倫去的、猶大一切流亡的人、都帶回這地來，因為我要折斷巴比倫王的軛：這是永恆主發神諭說的。』

王吩咐太監長亞施毘拿要從以色列人王家後裔、和顯達者之中、引進幾個人來，就是年輕的人，沒有任何殘疾、相貌俊美、通達各樣學問，富有知識，滿有學識、聰明，足能侍立在王宮殿的，要將迦勒底人的典籍和語言教授他們。王將王的大餐日日的分兒、和他自己喝的酒、分派給他們，將他們養大了三年；過了三年、他們好侍立在王面前。他們中間有猶大族的人、但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅。太監長給他們起了名，把但以理叫做伯提沙撒，把哈拿尼雅叫做沙得拉，把米沙利叫做米煞，把亞撒利雅叫做亞伯尼歌。但是但以理卻抱定心意、決不以王的大餐和王所喝的酒而玷污自己；因此他便要求太監長准他不玷污自己。上帝使但以理在太監長眼前得到特別的待遇和同情；太監長對但以理說：『我懼怕我主我王；他把你們的飲食分派好了；何必讓他見你們面貌比同輩的年輕人憔悴難看呢？那你們就使我的腦袋在王面前難保了。』但以理對太監長所派來照管但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅的監護人說：『請試試僕人們十天，給我們素菜喫，白水喝。然後讓你看看我們的面貌、和那喫王大餐的年輕人的面貌，就照你所看的怎麼樣來待僕人吧。』關於這事、監護人允准他們，便試試他們十天。過了十天，見他們的面貌比所有喫王大餐的年輕人還俊美、還肌豐肉肥。於是監護人就把所要給他們喫的大餐、和他們所該喝的酒、撤去，給了他們蔬菜。這四個年輕人、上帝在各樣典籍和學問上都賜給他們知識和通達；但以理又明白各樣異象和夢兆。尼布甲尼撒王吩咐把眾年輕人引進去的日期到了，太監長就把他們引進到王面前。王同他們談了話；見他們中間沒有一個能比得上但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅的；於是他們四人就侍立在王面前。王無論諮詢他們甚麼智慧聰明的事、都看出他們比全國所有的學術士和用法術的還勝過十倍。這樣、到古列王元年、但以理還在。
