“我指著我的永生起誓（這是耶和華的宣告），猶大王約雅敬的兒子哥尼雅，雖然你是我右手上的印戒，我也要把你從手上脫下來，交在那些尋索你性命和你們懼怕的人手中，就是交在巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒和迦勒底人手中。我要把你和生你的母親驅趕到異地去，你們不是生在那裡，卻要死在那裡。你們（“你們”原文作“他們”）渴望歸回本國，卻不得回去。”哥尼雅這個人是被鄙視、被摔碎的瓶子，是沒有人喜悅的器皿嗎？他和他的後裔為甚麼被驅趕，被拋棄到他們不認識的地去呢？

猶大王約雅斤和他的母親、眾臣僕、眾領袖，以及眾太監，出城投降巴比倫王。巴比倫王於是捉住他。那時，是巴比倫王在位第八年。他又從耶路撒冷把耶和華殿一切寶物和王宮的寶物取去，並且把以色列王所羅門在耶和華殿所做的一切金器都搗毀，就像耶和華所說的。他又擄去耶路撒冷的眾民、眾領袖，以及英勇的戰士共一萬人，還有工匠、鐵匠；除了國民中最貧窮的以外，沒有剩下的。他把約雅斤擄到巴比倫去，又把太后、后妃、太監和國中的要員都從耶路撒冷擄到巴比倫；還有七千位戰士，一千位工匠和鐵匠，全都是能作戰的勇士，巴比倫王把他們都擄到巴比倫去。

約雅斤登基的時候，是八歲；他在耶路撒冷作王共三個月零十天，行耶和華看為惡的事。過了年，尼布甲尼撒派人去把約雅斤和耶和華殿裡的珍貴的器皿，一起帶到巴比倫來。他立了約雅斤的叔叔西底家，作猶大和耶路撒冷的王。

就是巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒把猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅，以及猶大和耶路撒冷所有的貴族，從耶路撒冷擄到巴比倫去的時候，沒有拿走的器皿；

並且你的眾子中，就是由你所出，你所生的，有一部分要被擄去。他們要在巴比倫王的王宮中當太監。”

巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒把猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅，和猶大的眾領袖、工匠與鐵匠從耶路撒冷擄到巴比倫去。這事以後，耶和華使我看見在耶和華的殿前面擺著兩筐無花果。

耶戶抬頭對著窗戶，說：“有誰擁護我？誰？”立時有兩三個太監往外望著他。

我也必把猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅，和所有被擄到巴比倫去的猶大人，都帶回這地方，因為我必折斷巴比倫王的軛。’這是耶和華的宣告。”

王吩咐他的太監長亞施毘拿說：“你要從以色列人中，把一些王室的後裔和貴族帶進來；這些年輕人必須沒有殘疾、英俊、足智多才、有高度學習能力、明察事理，而且他們必須有能力可以在王宮裡工作。你要教他們學習迦勒底的文學和語言。”王指定每日給他們一份御用的佳餚美酒；又教養他們三年。期滿以後，他們就侍立在王面前。他們中間有猶大人但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅。太監長給他們起了新的名字，稱但以理為伯提沙撒，哈拿尼雅為沙得拉，米沙利為米煞，亞撒利雅為亞伯尼歌。但以理決心不讓御用的佳餚美酒玷污自己，所以求太監長幫助他，使他不用玷污自己。於是神使但以理在太監長面前得著恩惠和同情。只是太監長對但以理說：“我懼怕我主我王，他已指定了你們應用的飲食；如果他見到你們的面色比你們同歲的年輕人憔悴難看，你們就使我的頭在王面前保不住了。”後來但以理對太監長分派看管但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅的人說：“請你試試僕人十天，容我們只吃素菜、喝清水。然後，請你觀察我們的容貌，和那些享用王的佳餚的年輕人的容貌，就照著你觀察的結果，待你的僕人吧！”看管他們的人就允准他們的這個要求，試試他們十天。過了十天，見他們的容貌比所有享用王的佳餚的年輕人，更加俊美健壯。看管他們的人就撤去指定給他們享用的佳餚美酒，讓他們吃素菜。這四個年輕人在各種文字和學問上，神都賜他們知識和聰明；但以理並且能明白一切異象和異夢。到了王吩咐帶所有年輕人進宮的日子，太監長就領他們到尼布甲尼撒王面前。王和他們談話，發現他們所有的人中，沒有一個比得上但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅的；他們四人就侍立在王面前。王考問他們一切智慧和聰明的事，就發現他們比全國所有的術士和用法術的更勝十倍。直到古列王元年，但以理還在。
