How dare you claim the LORD’s authority to prophesy such things! How dare you claim his authority to prophesy that this temple will become like Shiloh and that this city will become an uninhabited ruin!” Then all the people crowded around Jeremiah.

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,“ Amos has conspired against you in the middle of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.For Amos says,‘ Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”Amaziah also said to Amos,“ You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:but don’t prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a royal house!”

But so that this spreads no further among the people, let’s threaten them, that from now on they don’t speak to anyone in this name.”They called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John answered them,“ Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves,

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”

Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

“ I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling place of jackals. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said,“ Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.

Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.

But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead.

But the unpersuaded Jews took along some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers before the rulers of the city, crying,“ These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!”The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.

But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said,“ These men, being Jews, are agitating our cityand advocate customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”The multitude rose up together against them and the magistrates tore their clothes from them, then commanded them to be beaten with rods.

They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said,“ Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”

saying,“ Didn’t we strictly command you not to teach in this name? Behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood on us.”

But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, and stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their borders.

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said,“ By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?”

who cause a person to be indicted by a word, and lay a snare for the arbiter in the gate, and who deprive the innocent of justice with false testimony.

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

All the city was moved and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.

“ Don’t prophesy!” They prophesy.“ Don’t prophesy about these things. Disgrace won’t overtake us.”

For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear Yahweh’s law;who tell the seers,“ Don’t see!” and the prophets,“ Don’t prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits.Get out of the way. Turn away from the path. Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.”

As he talked with him, the king said to him,“ Have we made you one of the king’s counselors? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” Then the prophet stopped, and said,“ I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel.”
