Elishama the royal secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials were seated there.Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll in the hearing of the people.All the officials sent Jehudi, who was the son of Nethaniah and the grandson of Cushi, to Baruch. They ordered him to tell Baruch,“ Come here and bring with you the scroll you read in the hearing of the people.” So Baruch son of Neriah went to them, carrying the scroll in his hand.They said to him,“ Please sit down and read it to us.” So Baruch sat down and read it to them.When they had heard it all, they expressed their alarm to one another. Then they said to Baruch,“ We must certainly give the king a report about everything you have read!”Then they asked Baruch,“ How did you come to write all these words? Do they actually come from Jeremiah’s mouth?”Baruch answered,“ Yes, they came from his own mouth. He dictated all these words to me and I wrote them down in ink on this scroll.”Then the officials said to Baruch,“ You and Jeremiah must go and hide. You must not let anyone know where you are.”

Then the officials and all the people rendered their verdict to the priests and the prophets. They said,“ This man should not be condemned to die. For he has spoken to us under the authority of the LORD our God.”Then some of the elders of Judah stepped forward and spoke to all the people gathered there. They said,

This man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.”King Zedekiah said to them,“ Very well, you can do what you want with him. For I cannot do anything to stop you.”So the officials took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern of Malkijah, one of the royal princes, that was in the courtyard of the guardhouse. There was no water in the cistern, only mud. So when they lowered Jeremiah into the cistern with ropes he sank in the mud.

I will punish the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all the other people of the land who passed between the pieces of the calf.

Jeremiah answered,“ That’s a lie! I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him. Irijah put Jeremiah under arrest and took him to the officials.The officials were very angry at Jeremiah. They had him flogged and put in prison in the house of Jonathan, the royal secretary, which they had converted into a place for confining prisoners.So Jeremiah was put in prison in a cell in the dungeon in Jonathan’s house. He was kept there for a long time.

“‘ See how each of the princes of Israel living within you has used his authority to shed blood.
