When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of the Lord’s house.

巴錄就在永恆主之殿的上院、永恆主之殿的新門口、沙番的兒子祕書基瑪利雅的廂房中、把書上耶利米的話念給眾民聽。

但邱壇還沒有廢去；人民仍在邱壇上宰牲燻祭。永恆主之殿的上門是約坦建立的。

就下王宮，到祕書的廂房那裏；只見所有的首領都坐那裏：有祕書以利沙瑪、示瑪雅的兒子第萊雅、亞革博的兒子以利拿單、沙番的兒子基瑪利雅、哈拿尼雅的兒子西底家、和所有其餘的首領。於是米該亞對他們述說他所聽見的一切話，就是巴錄將那書念給眾民聽的時候米該亞所聽見的。眾首領就打發古示的曾孫示利米雅的孫子尼探雅的兒子猶底去見巴錄說：『你將所念給眾民聽的書卷親手拿來。』尼利亞的兒子巴錄就把書卷親手拿到他們那裏。他們對他說：『請坐下，念給我們聽。』巴錄就念給他們聽。他們聽見這一切話就震驚恐懼，彼此相對，向巴錄說：『我們必須將這一切話告訴王。』他們問巴錄說：『請告訴我們，你是怎樣寫了這一切話的？是由他口傳的麼？』巴錄對他們說：『他親口將這一切話念給我聽，我就用筆墨寫在書上。』首領們對巴錄說：『去哦，你和耶利米都要去藏起來；不要叫人知道你們在哪裏。』

首領和眾民就對祭司和神言人們說：『這人不該死，因為他是奉永恆主我們的上帝的名向我們說話的。』地方上的長老就有幾個人起來，對人民全體大眾說：

雖然如此，沙番的兒子亞希甘的手卻保護着耶利米，以致沒有人把耶利米交在人民手中去處死他。

她的首領在她裏邊正彷彿豺狼抓撕所抓到之物；他們行兇流人的血，殺滅人的性命，要得不義之財。

並且以利拿單、第萊雅和基瑪利雅懇求王不要燒這書卷，王也不聽他們。

於是首領們對王說：『這個人該受處死；因為他向這城裏剩下的軍兵和眾民說了這樣的話，是叫軍兵的手和眾民的手都軟下來；因為這個人不是謀求這人民得平安，只是謀求他們受災禍罷了。西底家王說：『看哪，他在你們手中；無論怎樣王都不會干涉你們。』他們就拿住耶利米，給扔在王子瑪基雅的井裏；那井在護衛監的院子裏；他們用繩子將耶利米縋下去。井裏沒有水，只是淤泥；耶利米就沉陷在淤泥中。

那些從牛犢的劈開部分中間走過去表示立約的人、就是猶大的首領、耶路撒冷的首領、太監、祭司、和國中的眾民；

耶利米說：『胡說；我並不是在投降迦勒底人哪。』伊利雅不聽他，卻把他拿住，解到首領那裏。首領惱怒耶利米，打了他，將他下在監裏、就是祕書約拿單的屋子，因為他們拿這屋子當作監獄。耶利米來到地牢，就進了獄室；耶利米在那裏呆了許多日子。

『看哪，以色列的眾首領各逞其權勢都在你中間要流人血呢。
