官員和民眾便對祭司和先知說：「這人不該被處死，因為他是奉我們上帝耶和華的名對我們說話。」有幾個長老站起來對眾人說：

然而，沙番的兒子亞希甘保護耶利米，他才沒被交給民眾處死。

你的首領好像撕碎獵物的豺狼，殺人流血，謀取不義之財。

雖然以利拿單、第萊雅和基瑪利雅懇求王不要把卷軸燒掉，王卻不聽，

這幾位官長就對西底迦王說：「求你處死這人！因為他的話令這城的軍民士氣低落。這人不為人民著想，反要害他們。」西底迦王說：「你們可以隨意處置他，我不會阻止你們。」於是，他們拿住耶利米，用繩子把他縋到王子瑪基雅的蓄水池裡。那池子在護衛兵的院子裡，池中沒有水，只有淤泥。耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

耶利米說：「不，我不是去投奔迦勒底人。」但伊利雅不信，把他押到眾官長那裡。官長們大怒，命人鞭打耶利米，把他囚禁在書記約拿單的房子裡，因為他們已把這房子改作監牢。耶利米被囚禁在地牢中許多天。

「『看啊，在你城中的以色列首領各逞權勢，殺人流血。
