官员和民众便对祭司和先知说：“这人不该被处死，因为他是奉我们上帝耶和华的名对我们说话。”有几个长老站起来对众人说：

然而，沙番的儿子亚希甘保护耶利米，他才没被交给民众处死。

你的首领好像撕碎猎物的豺狼，杀人流血，谋取不义之财。

虽然以利拿单、第莱雅和基玛利雅恳求王不要把卷轴烧掉，王却不听，

这几位官长就对西底迦王说：“求你处死这人！因为他的话令这城的军民士气低落。这人不为人民着想，反要害他们。”西底迦王说：“你们可以随意处置他，我不会阻止你们。”于是，他们拿住耶利米，用绳子把他缒到王子玛基雅的蓄水池里。那池子在护卫兵的院子里，池中没有水，只有淤泥。耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

耶利米说：“不，我不是去投奔迦勒底人。”但伊利雅不信，把他押到众官长那里。官长们大怒，命人鞭打耶利米，把他囚禁在书记约拿单的房子里，因为他们已把这房子改作监牢。耶利米被囚禁在地牢中许多天。

“‘看啊，在你城中的以色列首领各逞权势，杀人流血。
