Concerning Moab. This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:“ Woe to Nebo, for it has been destroyed; Kiriathaim has been put to shame, it has been captured; The high stronghold has been put to shame and shattered.There is no longer praise for Moab; In Heshbon they have devised disaster against her:‘ Come and let’s cut her off from being a nation!’ You too, Madmen, will be silenced; The sword will follow you.The sound of an outcry from Horonaim,‘ Devastation and great destruction!’Moab is broken, Her little ones have sounded out a cry of distress.For they will go up by the ascent of Luhith With continual weeping; For at the descent of Horonaim They have heard the anguished cry of destruction.Flee, save yourselves, So that you may be like a juniper in the wilderness.For because of your trust in your own achievements and treasures, You yourself will also be captured; And Chemosh will go off into exile Together with his priests and his leaders.A destroyer will come to every city, So that no city will escape; The valley also will be ruined And the plateau will be destroyed, As the Lord has said.Give wings to Moab, For she will flee away; And her cities will become a desolation, Without inhabitants in them.Cursed is the one who does the Lord’s work negligently, And cursed is the one who restrains his sword from blood.“ Moab has been at ease since his youth; He has also been peaceful, like wine on its dregs, And he has not been poured from vessel to vessel, Nor has he gone into exile. Therefore he retains his flavor, And his aroma has not changed.Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will pour out his vessels and smash his jars.And Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.How can you say,‘ We are warriors, And men competent for battle’?Moab has been destroyed and men have gone up to his cities; His choicest young men have also gone down to the slaughter,” Declares the King, whose name is the Lord of armies.“ The disaster of Moab will soon come, And his catastrophe has hurried quickly.Mourn for him, all you who live around him, And all of you who know his name; Say,‘ How the mighty scepter has been broken, A staff of splendor!’Come down from your glory And sit on the parched ground, O daughter living in Dibon, For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you, He has ruined your strongholds.Stand by the road and keep watch, You inhabitant of Aroer; Ask him who flees and her who escapes And say,‘ What has happened?’Moab has been put to shame, for it has been shattered. Wail and cry out; Declare by the Arnon That Moab has been destroyed.“ Judgment has also come upon the plain, upon Holon, Jahzah, and against Mephaath,against Dibon, Nebo, and Beth diblathaim,against Kiriathaim, Beth gamul, and Beth meon,against Kerioth, Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.The horn of Moab has been cut off, and his arm broken,” declares the Lord.“ Make him drunk, for he has become arrogant toward the Lord; so Moab will vomit, and he also will become a laughingstock.Now was Israel not a laughingstock to you? Or was he caught among thieves? For whenever you speak about him you shake your head in scorn.Leave the cities and live among the rocky cliffs, You inhabitants of Moab, And be like a dove that nests Beyond the mouth of the chasm.We have heard of the pride of Moab— he is very proud— Of his haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance, and his self exaltation.I know his fury,” declares the Lord,“ But it is futile; His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.Therefore I will wail for Moab, For all of Moab I will cry out; I will moan for the men of Kir heres.More than the weeping for Jazer I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah! Your tendrils stretched across the sea, They reached to the sea of Jazer; Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest The destroyer has fallen.So joy and rejoicing are removed From the fruitful field, and from the land of Moab. And I have eliminated the wine from the wine presses; No one will tread them with shouting, The shouting will not be shouts of joy.From the outcry at Heshbon to Elealeh, to Jahaz they have raised their voice, from Zoar to Horonaim, and to Eglath shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim will become desolate.And I will put an end to Moab,” declares the Lord,“ the one who offers sacrifice on the high place and the one who burns incense to his gods.“ Therefore My heart makes a sound like flutes for Moab; My heart also makes a sound like flutes for the men of Kir heres. Therefore they have lost the abundance it produced.For every head is shaved bald, and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands, and sackcloth around the waists.On all the housetops of Moab and in its public squares there is mourning everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable vessel,” declares the Lord.“ How shattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back— he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an object of terror to all around him.”For this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, one will fly swiftly like an eagle And spread out his wings against Moab.Kerioth has been captured And the strongholds have been seized, So the hearts of the warriors of Moab on that day Will be like the heart of a woman in labor.Moab will be destroyed from being a people Because he has become arrogant toward the Lord.Terror, pit, and snare are coming upon you, Inhabitant of Moab,” declares the Lord.“ The one who flees from the terror Will fall into the pit, And the one who climbs up out of the pit Will be caught in the snare; For I will bring upon her, upon Moab, The year of their punishment,” declares the Lord.“ In the shadow of Heshbon The fugitives stand without strength; For a fire has spread out from Heshbon And a flame from the midst of Sihon, And it has devoured the forehead of Moab And the scalps of the loud revelers.Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished; For your sons have been taken away captive, And your daughters into captivity.Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab In the latter days,” declares the Lord. This is the extent of the judgment on Moab.Concerning the sons of Ammon. This is what the Lord says:“ Does Israel have no sons? Or has he no heirs? Why then has Malcam taken possession of Gad, And his people settled in its cities?Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ When I will cause an alarm of war to be heard Against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap, And her towns will be set on fire. Then Israel will take possession of his possessors,” Says the Lord.“ Wail, Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, Put on sackcloth and mourn, And move about inside the walls; For Malcam will go into exile Together with his priests and his leaders.How you boast about the valleys! Your valley is flowing away, You backsliding daughter Who trusts in her treasures, saying,‘ Who can come against me?’Behold, I am going to bring terror upon you,” Declares the Lord God of armies,“ From all directions around you; And you will be driven away one after another, With no one to gather the fugitives together.But afterward I will restore The fortunes of the sons of Ammon,” Declares the Lord.Concerning Edom. This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Is there no longer any wisdom in Teman? Has good advice been lost by the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, You inhabitants of Dedan, For I will bring the disaster of Esau upon him At the time I punish him.If grape pickers came to you, Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, They would destroy only what was sufficient for them.But I have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places So that he will not be able to conceal himself; His offspring have been destroyed along with his brothers And his neighbors, and he no longer exists.Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.”For this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, so are you the one who will be held completely blameless? You will not be held blameless, but you will certainly drink it.For I have sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord,“ that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a disgrace, a wasteland, and a curse; and all its cities will become permanent ruins.”I have heard a message from the Lord, And a messenger is being sent among the nations, saying,“ Gather yourselves together and come against her, And rise up for battle!”“ For behold, I have made you small among the nations, Despised among people.As for the terror you cause, The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, Who occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s, I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.“ Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will hiss at all its wounds.Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord,“ no one will live there, nor will anyone of mankind reside in it.Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is chosen. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has in mind against the inhabitants of Teman: they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture desolate because of them.The earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the Red Sea.Behold, He will mount up and swoop like an eagle, and spread out His wings against Bozrah; and the hearts of the warriors of Edom on that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

Remember, Lord, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Those who said,“ Lay it bare, lay it bare To its foundation!”

Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all those inhabiting the desert who trim the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength?“ It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, mighty to save.”Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the wine press?“ I have trodden the wine trough alone, And from the peoples there was no one with Me. I also trod them in My anger And trampled them in My wrath; And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, And I stained all My clothes.For the day of vengeance was in My heart, And My year of redemption has come.I looked, but there was no one to help, And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold; So My own arm brought salvation to Me, And My wrath upheld Me.I trampled down the peoples in My anger And made them drunk with My wrath, And I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

“ I have heard the taunting of Moab And the abusive speech of the sons of Ammon, With which they have taunted My people And boasted against their territory.Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of armies, The God of Israel,“ Moab will assuredly be like Sodom, And the sons of Ammon like Gomorrah— Ground overgrown with weeds and full of salt mines, And a permanent desolation. The remnant of My people will plunder them, And the remainder of My nation will inherit them.”This they will have in return for their arrogance, because they have taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of armies.

The pronouncement concerning Moab: Certainly in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined; Certainly in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.The people have gone up to the temple and to Dibon, to the high places to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba; Everyone’s head is bald and every beard is cut off.In their streets they have put on sackcloth; On their housetops and in their public squares Everyone is wailing, overcome with weeping.Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out, Their voice is heard all the way to Jahaz; Therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; His soul trembles within him.My heart cries out for Moab; His fugitives are as far as Zoar and Eglath shelishiyah, For they go up the ascent of Luhith weeping; Indeed, on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of distress over their collapse.For the waters of Nimrim are desolate. Indeed, the grass is withered, the new growth has died, There is no greenery.Therefore the abundance which they have acquired and stored up, They carry it off over the brook of Arabim.For the cry of distress has gone around the territory of Moab, Its wailing goes as far as Eglaim and its howling to Beer elim.For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; I will certainly bring added woes upon Dimon, A lion upon the fugitives of Moab and the remnant of the land.

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say,“ How have You loved us?”“ Was Esau not Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord.“ Yet I have loved Jacob;but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and given his inheritance to the jackals of the wilderness.”Though Edom says,“ We have been beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins”; this is what the Lord of armies says:“ They may build, but I will tear down; and people will call them the territory of wickedness, and the people with whom the Lord is indignant forever.”

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says concerning Edom— We have heard a report from the Lord, And a messenger has been sent among the nations saying,“ Arise, and let’s go up against her for battle”—“ Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised.The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, The one who lives in the clefts of the rock, On the height of his dwelling place, Who says in his heart,‘ Who will bring me down to earth?’Though you make your home high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.“ If thieves came to you, If robbers by night— Oh how you will be ruined!— Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, Would they not leave some gleanings?Oh how Esau will be searched, And his hidden treasures searched out!All the people allied with you Will send you to the border, And the people at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you.( There is no understanding in him.)Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,“ Eliminate wise men from Edom, And understanding from the mountain of Esau?Then your warriors will be filled with terror, Teman, So that everyone will be eliminated from the mountain of Esau by murder.“ Because of violence to your brother Jacob, Shame will cover you, And you will be eliminated forever.On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem— You too were as one of them.Do not gloat over your brother’s day, The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah On the day of their destruction; Yes, do not boast On the day of their distress.Do not enter the gate of My people On the day of their disaster. You indeed, do not gloat over their catastrophe On the day of their disaster. And do not lay a hand on their wealth On the day of their disaster.Do not stand at the crossroads To eliminate their survivors; And do not hand over their refugees On the day of their distress.“ For the day of the Lord is near for all the nations. Just as you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head.For just as you drank on My holy mountain, All the nations will drink continually. They will drink to the last drop, And become as if they had never existed.

For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain, And Moab will be trampled down in his place As straw is trampled down in the water of a manure pile.

Rejoice and be joyful, daughter of Edom, Who lives in the land of Uz; But the cup will pass to you as well, You will become drunk and expose yourself.The punishment of your wrongdoing has been completed, daughter of Zion; He will no longer exile you. But He will punish your wrongdoing, daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins!

Come near, you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples! Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.For the Lord’s anger is against all the nations, And His wrath against all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them, He has turned them over to slaughter.So their slain will be thrown out, And their corpses will give off their stench, And the mountains will be drenched with their blood.And all the heavenly lights will wear away, And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; All its lights will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine, Or as one withers from the fig tree.For My sword has drunk its fill in heaven; Behold it shall descend for judgment upon Edom, And upon the people whom I have designated for destruction.The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, With the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.Wild oxen will also fall with them And young bulls with strong ones; So their land will be soaked with blood, And their dust become greasy with fat.For the Lord has a day of vengeance, A year of retribution for the cause of Zion.Its streams will be turned into pitch, And its loose earth into brimstone, And its land will become burning pitch.It will not be extinguished night or day; Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation it will be desolate; None will pass through it forever and ever.But pelican and hedgehog will possess it, And owl and raven will dwell in it; And He will stretch over it the line of desolation And the plumb line of emptiness.Its nobles— there is no one there Whom they may proclaim king— And all its officials will be nothing.Thorns will come up in its fortified towers, Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities; It will also be a haunt of jackals And a habitat of ostriches.The desert creatures will meet with the wolves, The goat also will cry to its kind. Yes, the night bird will settle there And will find herself a resting place.The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there, And it will hatch and gather them under its protection. Yes, the hawks will be gathered there, Every one with its kind.Seek from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these will be missing; None will lack its mate. For His mouth has commanded, And His Spirit has gathered them.He has cast the lot for them, And His hand has divided it to them by the measuring line. They shall possess it forever; From generation to generation they will dwell in it.

“ There also is Edom, its kings and all its princes, who despite all their might are laid with those killed by the sword; they will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit.

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against itand say to it,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, And I will reach out with My hand against you And make you a desolation and a waste.I will turn your cities to ruins, And you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the Lord.Since you have had everlasting hostility and have turned over the sons of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of the punishment of the end,therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God,“ I will certainly doom you to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you; since you have not hated bloodshed, therefore bloodshed will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation and I will eliminate from it one who passes through and returns.I will fill its mountains with its slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.I will make you a permanent desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“ Since you have said,‘ These two nations and these two lands will be mine, and we will possess them,’ although the Lord was there,therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God,“ I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your envy which you displayed because of your hatred for them; so I will make Myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I, the Lord, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel saying,‘ They are desolate; they have been given to us as food.’And you have spoken arrogantly against Me and have multiplied your words against Me; I Myself have heard it.”This is what the Lord God says:“ As all the earth rejoices, I will make you a desolation.As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to you. You will be a desolation, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.” ’

“ Son of man, set your face against the sons of Ammon and prophesy against them,and say to the sons of Ammon,‘ Hear the word of the Lord God! This is what the Lord God says:“ Because you said,‘ Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile,therefore, behold, I am going to give you to the people of the east as a possession, and they will set up their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk.I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”For this is what the Lord God says:“ Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel,therefore, behold, I have reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will know that I am the Lord.”‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Moab and Seir say,‘ Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’therefore, behold, I am going to deprive the flank of Moab of its cities, of its cities which are on its frontiers, the glory of the land, Beth jeshimoth, Baal meon, and Kiriathaim;and I will give it as a possession along with the sons of Ammon to the people of the east, so that the sons of Ammon will not be remembered among the nations.So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.”‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ I will also reach out with My hand against Edom and eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from Teman even to Dedan they will fall by the sword.And I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword And stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.So I will send fire upon Teman And it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.”This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead In order to enlarge their borders.So I will kindle a fire on the wall of Rabbah, And it will consume her citadels Amid war cries on the day of battle, And amid a storm on the day of tempest.Their king will go into exile, He and his princes together,” says the Lord.This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid the panic of battle, Amid war cries and the sound of a trumpet.I will also eliminate the judge from her midst And slay all her leaders with him,” says the Lord.

Then the house of Jacob will be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be like stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau,” For the Lord has spoken.

and send word to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the sons of Ammon, the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon by the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.
