“ Please inquire of the Lord in our behalf, because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us; perhaps the Lord will deal with us in accordance with all His wonderful acts, so that the enemy will withdraw from us.”

“ Inquire now of the Lord for us because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.”

“ Ask the Lord to help us. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. In the past the Lord did wonderful things for us. Maybe he’ll do them again. Then Nebuchadnezzar will pull his armies back from us.”

“ Inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all his wonderful deeds and will make him withdraw from us.”

“ Please speak to the Lord for us and ask him to help us. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking Judah. Perhaps the Lord will be gracious and do a mighty miracle as he has done in the past. Perhaps he will force Nebuchadnezzar to withdraw his armies.”

“ Inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all his past wondrous works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

“ Please inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, that the king may go away from us.”

Inquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us: peradventure Jehovah will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

“ Ask the Lord on our behalf, since Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will perform for us something like all His past wonderful works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

“ Please ask the LORD to come and help us, because King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking us. Maybe the LORD will perform one of his miracles as in times past and make him stop attacking us and leave.”

“ Please inquire of Yahweh for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps Yahweh will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may withdraw from us.”

Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and the priest Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying,“ Please pray to the Lord our God in our behalf.”

Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, men from the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat before me.Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Do you yourselves come to inquire of Me? As I live,” declares the Lord God,“ I certainly will not be inquired of by you.” ’

“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says:‘ This is what you are to say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me:“ Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, is going to return to its own land of Egypt.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them,“ I have heard you. Behold, I am going to pray to the Lord your God in accordance with your words; and I will tell you the whole message which the Lord gives you as an answer. I will not withhold a word from you.”Then they said to Jeremiah,“ May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with the whole message with which the Lord your God will send you to us.Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will listen to the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well for us when we listen to the voice of the Lord our God.”

And Samuel said to Saul,“ Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied,“ I am very distressed, for the Philistines are waging war against me, and God has abandoned me and no longer answers me, either through prophets or in dreams; therefore I have called you, so that you may let me know what I should do.”

So Saul inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him, either in dreams, or by the Urim, or by the prophets.

And the sons of Israel inquired of the Lord( for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days, In the days of old.You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You let them go free.For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them.You are my King, God; Command victories for Jacob.

And Jeroboam said to his wife,“ Now arise and disguise yourself so that they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said regarding me that I would be king over this people.Take ten loaves with you, some pastries, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”

Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died.So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; and the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth hagoyim.The sons of Israel cried out to the Lord; for he had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the sons of Israel severely for twenty years.Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went up to her for judgment.

Therefore they inquired further of the Lord:“ Has the man come here yet?” And the Lord said,“ Behold, he is hiding himself among the baggage.”

For, behold, the kings arrived, They passed by together.They saw it, then they were amazed; They were terrified, they fled in a hurry.Panic seized them there, Anguish, as that of a woman in childbirth.With the east wind You smash the ships of Tarshish.Just as we have heard, so have we seen In the city of the Lord of armies, in the city of our God; God will establish her forever. Selah

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,“ Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them,‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal zebub, the god of Ekron?’

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear.But your wrongdoings have caused a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.

Now when Jerusalem was captured in the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came to Jerusalem and laid siege to it;in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the city wall was breached.

Then King Zedekiah sent word and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance that is in the house of the Lord; and the king said to Jeremiah,“ I am going to ask you something; do not hide anything from me.”And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,“ If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? Besides, if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.”But King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in secret, saying,“ As the Lord lives, who made this life for us, I certainly will not put you to death, nor will I hand you over to these men who are seeking your life.”So Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,“ This is what the Lord God of armies, the God of Israel says:‘ If you will indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned with fire, and you and your household will survive.But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be handed over to the Chaldeans; and they will burn it with fire, and you yourself will not escape from their hands.’ ”Then King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,“ I am in fear of the Jews who have deserted to the Chaldeans, for they may hand me over to them, and they will abuse me.”But Jeremiah said,“ They will not turn you over. Please obey the Lord in what I am saying to you, so that it may go well for you and you may live.But if you keep refusing to surrender, this is the word which the Lord has shown me:‘ Behold, all of the women who have been left in the palace of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the officers of the king of Babylon; and those women will say,“ Your close friends Have misled and overpowered you; While your feet were sunk in the mire, They turned back.”They are also going to bring out all your wives and your sons to the Chaldeans, and you yourself will not escape from their hand, but will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned with fire.’ ”Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,“ Let no one know about these words, and you will not die.But if the officials hear that I have talked with you and come to you and say to you,‘ Tell us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us and we will not put you to death,’then you are to say to them,‘ I was presenting my plea before the king, not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’ ”Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him. So he reported to them in accordance with all these words which the king had commanded; and they stopped speaking with him, since the conversation had not been overheard.

“ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put in front of their faces the stumbling block of their wrongdoing. Should I let Myself be consulted by them at all?Therefore speak to them and tell them,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Anyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts in front of his face the stumbling block of his wrongdoing, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will let Myself answer him in the matter in view of the multitude of his idols,in order to take hold of the hearts of the house of Israel who have turned away from Me due to all their idols.” ’“ Therefore say to the house of Israel,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who reside in Israel, who deserts Me, sets up his idols in his heart, puts in front of his face the stumbling block of his wrongdoing, and then comes to the prophet to request something of Me for himself, I the Lord will let Myself answer him Myself.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His faithfulness is everlasting.Give thanks to the God of gods, For His faithfulness is everlasting.Give thanks to the Lord of lords, For His faithfulness is everlasting.To Him who alone does great wonders, For His faithfulness is everlasting;To Him who made the heavens with skill, For His faithfulness is everlasting;To Him who spread out the earth above the waters, For His faithfulness is everlasting;To Him who made the great lights, For His faithfulness is everlasting:The sun to rule by day, For His faithfulness is everlasting,The moon and stars to rule by night, For His faithfulness is everlasting.To Him who struck the Egyptians, that is, their firstborn, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And brought Israel out from their midst, For His faithfulness is everlasting,With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, For His faithfulness is everlasting.To Him who divided the Red Sea in parts, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And allowed Israel to pass through the midst of it, For His faithfulness is everlasting;But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, For His faithfulness is everlasting.To Him who led His people through the wilderness, For His faithfulness is everlasting;To Him who struck great kings, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And brought death to mighty kings, For His faithfulness is everlasting:Sihon, king of the Amorites, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And Og, king of Bashan, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And gave their land as an inheritance, For His faithfulness is everlasting,An inheritance to His servant Israel, For His faithfulness is everlasting.Who remembered us in our lowliness, For His faithfulness is everlasting,And has rescued us from our enemies, For His faithfulness is everlasting;Who gives food to all flesh, For His faithfulness is everlasting.Give thanks to the God of heaven, For His faithfulness is everlasting.

Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments spoken by His mouth,You descendants of Abraham, His servant, You sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac.Then He confirmed it to Jacob as a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant,Saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan As the portion of your inheritance,”When they were only a few people in number, Very few, and strangers in it.And they wandered from nation to nation, From one kingdom to another people,He allowed no one to oppress them, And He rebuked kings for their sakes, saying,“ Do not touch My anointed ones, And do not harm My prophets.”And He called for a famine upon the land; He broke the whole staff of bread.He sent a man before them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.They forced his feet into shackles, He was put in irons;Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the Lord refined him.The king sent and released him, The ruler of peoples, and set him free.He made him lord of his house, And ruler over all his possessions,To imprison his high officials at will, That he might teach his elders wisdom.Israel also came into Egypt; So Jacob lived in the land of Ham.And He made His people very fruitful, And made them stronger than their enemies.He turned their heart to hate His people, To deal cunningly with His servants.He sent His servant Moses, And Aaron, whom He had chosen.They performed His wondrous acts among them, And miracles in the land of Ham.He sent darkness and made it dark; And they did not rebel against His words.He turned their waters into blood, And caused their fish to die.Their land swarmed with frogs Even in the chambers of their kings.He spoke, and a swarm of flies And gnats invaded all their territory.He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land.He also struck their vines and their fig trees, And smashed the trees of their territory.He spoke, and locusts came, And creeping locusts, beyond number,And they ate all the vegetation in their land, And ate the fruit of their ground.He also fatally struck all the firstborn in their land, The first fruits of all their vigor.Then He brought the Israelites out with silver and gold, And among His tribes there was not one who stumbled.Egypt was glad when they departed, For the dread of them had fallen upon the Egyptians.He spread out a cloud as a covering, And fire to illumine by night.They asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven.He opened the rock and water flowed out; It ran in the dry places like a river.For He remembered His holy word With His servant Abraham;And He led out His people with joy, His chosen ones with a joyful shout.He also gave them the lands of the nations, So that they might take possession of the fruit of the peoples’ labor,And that they might keep His statutes And comply with His laws; Praise the Lord!

Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has inflicted horrific events on the earth.He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire.“ Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.”The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah

Now in the ninth year of his reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, camped against it, and built a siege wall all around it.So the city was under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

But David said to the Philistine,“ You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a saber, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you and remove your head from you. Then I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,and that this entire assembly may know that the Lord does not save by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will hand you over to us!”Then it happened, when the Philistine came closer to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone penetrated his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and the stone: he struck the Philistine and killed him, and there was no sword in David’s hand.

‘ Oh, Lord God! Behold, You Yourself have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,

Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor,“ Come, and let’s cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men; perhaps the Lord will work for us, because the Lord is not limited to saving by many or by few!”His armor bearer said to him,“ Do everything that is in your heart; turn yourself to it, and here I am with you, as your heart desires.”Then Jonathan said,“ Behold, we are going to cross over to the men and reveal ourselves to them.If they say to us,‘ Wait until we come to you’; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them.But if they say,‘ Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the Lord has handed them over to us; and this shall be the sign to us.”When the two of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, the Philistines said,“ Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have kept themselves hidden.”So the men of the garrison responded to Jonathan and his armor bearer and said,“ Come up to us and we will inform you of something.” And Jonathan said to his armor bearer,“ Come up after me, for the Lord has handed them over to Israel.”Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer behind him; and the men fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer put some to death after him.Now that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer inflicted was about twenty men within about half a furrow in an acre of land.

“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for the wrath of the Lord that burns against us is great, because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book, to act in accordance with everything that is written regarding us.”So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe( and she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter); and they spoke to her.

Now it came about after this, that the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat.Then some came and reported to Jehoshaphat, saying,“ A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Aram; and behold, they are in Hazazon tamar( that is Engedi).”Jehoshaphat was afraid and turned his attention to seek the Lord; and he proclaimed a period of fasting throughout Judah.So Judah gathered together to seek help from the Lord; they even came from all the cities of Judah to seek the Lord.Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord in front of the new courtyard;and he said,“ Lord, God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.Did You not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land from Your people Israel, and give it to the descendants of Your friend Abraham forever?They have lived in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying,‘ If disaster comes upon us, the sword, or judgment, or plague, or famine, we will stand before this house and before You( for Your name is in this house), and cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear and save us.’Now behold, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You did not allow Israel to invade when they came out of the land of Egypt( for they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),see how they are rewarding us by coming to drive us out from Your possession which You have given us as an inheritance.Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”All Judah was standing before the Lord, with their infants, their wives, and their children.Then in the midst of the assembly the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite of the sons of Asaph;and he said,“ Listen, all you of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: This is what the Lord says to you:‘ Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s.Tomorrow, go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley in front of the wilderness of Jeruel.You need not fight in this battle; take your position, stand and watch the salvation of the Lord in your behalf, Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow, go out to face them, for the Lord is with you.”Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping the Lord.The Levites, from the sons of the Kohathites and from the sons of the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel, with a very loud voice.They rose early in the morning and went out to the wilderness of Tekoa; and when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said,“ Listen to me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Put your trust in the Lord your God and you will endure. Put your trust in His prophets, and succeed.”When he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who sang to the Lord and those who praised Him in holy attire, as they went out before the army and said,“ Give thanks to the Lord, for His faithfulness is everlasting.”When they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were struck down.For the sons of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, completely destroying them; and when they had finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they turned toward the multitude, and behold, they were corpses lying on the ground, and there was no survivor.When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their spoils, they found much among them, including goods, garments, and valuable things which they took for themselves, more than they could carry. And they were taking the spoils for three days because there was so much.Then on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, for they blessed the Lord there. Therefore they have named that place“ The Valley of Beracah” until today.Every man of Judah and Jerusalem returned, with Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had helped them to rejoice over their enemies.They came to Jerusalem with harps, lyres, and trumpets, to the house of the Lord.And the dread of God was on all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.So the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God gave him rest on all sides.

Now it came about when Adoni zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and had utterly destroyed it( just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were within their land,that he feared greatly because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.Therefore Adoni zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,“ Come up to me and help me, and let’s attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the sons of Israel.”So the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they with all their armies, and camped by Gibeon and fought against it.Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying,“ Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites that live in the hill country have assembled against us.”So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the valiant warriors.And the Lord said to Joshua,“ Do not fear them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of them will stand against you.”So Joshua came upon them suddenly by marching all night from Gilgal.And the Lord brought them into confusion before Israel, and He struck them down in a great defeat at Gibeon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent to Beth horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.And as they fled from Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth horon, the Lord hurled large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

Now Zerah the Ethiopian went out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.So Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said,“ Lord, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; help us, Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You.”So the Lord routed the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar; and so many Ethiopians fell that they could not recover, for they were shattered before the Lord and before His army. And they carried away a very large amount of plunder.

Now Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, and the Philistines advanced to battle Israel. But the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day against the Philistines and confused them, so that they were struck down before Israel.And the men of Israel came out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and killed them as far as below Beth car.Then Samuel took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying,“ So far the Lord has helped us.”

Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp in front of Pi hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal zephon, opposite it, by the sea.For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel,‘ They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said,“ What is this that we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”So he had horses harnessed to his chariot and took his people with him;and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.So the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out boldly.Then the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi hahiroth, in front of Baal zephon.As Pharaoh approached, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were coming after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.Then they said to Moses,“ Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt?Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying,‘ Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness!”But Moses said to the people,“ Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will perform for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again, ever.The Lord will fight for you, while you keep silent.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.

Behold, the assault ramps have reached the city to take it; and the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, the famine, and the plague; and what You have spoken has come to pass; and behold, You see it.

Now the king of Israel said to his servants,“ Are you aware that Ramoth gilead belongs to us, yet we are hesitant to take it out of the hand of the king of Aram?”So he said to Jehoshaphat,“ Will you go to battle with me at Ramoth gilead?” And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ Consider me yours, my people yours, and my horses yours!”However, Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ Please request the word of the Lord first.”So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and said to them,“ Should I go to battle against Ramoth gilead or should I refrain?” And they said,“ Go up, for the Lord will hand it over to the king.”But Jehoshaphat said,“ Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of him?”And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him, because he does not prophesy anything good regarding me, but only bad. He is Micaiah the son of Imlah.” But Jehoshaphat said,“ May the king not say so.”

For because of the anger of the Lord this came about in Jerusalem and Judah, until He drove them out from His presence. And Zedekiah revolted against the king of Babylon.Now it came about in the ninth year of his reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, camped against it, and built a bulwark all around it.So the city was under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

But Jehoshaphat said,“ Is there no prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?” And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said,“ Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.”And Jehoshaphat said,“ The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.Now Elisha said to the king of Israel,“ What business do you have with me? Go to your father’s prophets and your mother’s prophets.” But the king of Israel said to him,“ No, for the Lord has called these three kings together to hand them over to Moab.”Elisha said,“ As surely as the Lord of armies lives, before whom I stand, if I did not respect Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you.

And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with the sword.
