“ Indeed, long ago you threw off my authority and refused to be subject to me. You said,‘ I will not serve you.’ Instead, you gave yourself to other gods on every high hill and under every green tree, like a prostitute sprawls out before her lovers.

“ Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said,‘ I will not serve you!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute.

“ Long ago you broke off the yoke I put on you. You tore off the ropes I tied you up with. You said,‘ I won’t serve you!’ In fact, on every high hill you lay down like a prostitute. You worshiped other gods under every green tree.

“ For long ago I broke your yoke and burst your bonds; but you said,‘ I will not serve.’ Yes, on every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down like a whore.

“ Long ago I broke the yoke that oppressed you and tore away the chains of your slavery, but still you said,‘ I will not serve you.’ On every hill and under every green tree, you have prostituted yourselves by bowing down to idols.

For long ago I broke your yoke; I tore off your chains. You insisted,“ I will not serve!” On every high hill and under every green tree you lay down like a prostitute.

You must by all means destroy all the places where the nations you are about to dispossess worship their gods– on the high mountains and hills and under every leafy tree.

I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from being their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and caused you to walk upright.

Their children are always thinking about their altars and their sacred poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah, set up beside the green trees on the high hills

When the time for them to be rescued comes,” says the LORD who rules over all,“ I will rescue you from foreign subjugation. I will deliver you from captivity. Foreigners will then no longer subjugate them.

How tragic that the once- faithful city has become a prostitute! She was once a center of justice, fairness resided in her, but now only murderers.

Then I told her,“ You must live with me many days; you must not commit adultery or have sexual intercourse with another man, and I also will wait for you.”

You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians because your sexual desires were insatiable; you prostituted yourself with them and yet you were still not satisfied.

When Josiah was king of Judah, the LORD said to me,“ Jeremiah, you have no doubt seen what wayward Israel has done. You have seen how she went up to every high hill and under every green tree to give herself like a prostitute to other gods.Yet even after she had done all that, I thought that she might come back to me. But she did not. Her sister, unfaithful Judah, saw what she did.She also saw that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods.

For their mother has committed adultery; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said,“ I will seek out my lovers; they are the ones who give me my bread and my water, my wool, my flax, my olive oil, and my wine.

Moses came and told the people all the LORD’s words and all the decisions. All the people answered together,“ We are willing to do all the words that the LORD has said,”

Joshua wrote these words in the Law Scroll of God. He then took a large stone and set it up there under the oak tree near the LORD’s shrine.

And now, I will break Assyria’s yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you.”

For their oppressive yoke and the club that strikes their shoulders, the cudgel the oppressor uses on them, you have shattered, as in the day of Midian’s defeat.

At that time the LORD will remove their burden from your shoulders, and their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be taken off because your neck will be too large.

“‘ But you trusted in your beauty and capitalized on your fame by becoming a prostitute. You offered your sexual favors to every man who passed by so that your beauty became his.You took some of your clothing and made for yourself decorated high places; you engaged in prostitution on them. You went to him to become his.

I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and spacious, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

You go near so that you can hear everything the LORD our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever he says to you; then we will pay attention and do it.”

I will break Assyria in my land, I will trample them underfoot on my hills. Their yoke will be removed from my people, the burden will be lifted from their shoulders.

Then they cried out to the LORD and admitted,‘ We have sinned, for we have forsaken the LORD and have served the Baals and the images of Ashtoreth. Now deliver us from the hand of our enemies so that we may serve you.’

Today you have declared the LORD to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him.

For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone invites you, you will eat from his sacrifice;and you then take his daughters for your sons, and when his daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods as well.

and all the people answered together,“ All that the LORD has commanded we will do!” So Moses brought the words of the people back to the LORD.

The people said to Joshua,“ We will worship the LORD our God and obey him.”

Jeroboam inaugurated a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival celebrated in Judah. On the altar in Bethel he offered sacrifices to the calves he had made. In Bethel he also appointed priests for the high places he had made.

They told Joshua,“ We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.

Or has God ever before tried to deliver a nation from the middle of another nation, accompanied by judgments, signs, wonders, war, strength, power, and other very terrifying things like the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

They will burn down your houses and execute judgments on you in front of many women. Thus I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will no longer give gifts to your clients.

you built yourself a chamber and put up a pavilion in every public square.At the head of every street you erected your pavilion and you disgraced your beauty when you spread your legs to every passerby and multiplied your promiscuity.

They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.

When you built your chamber at the head of every street and put up your pavilion in every public square, you were not like a prostitute, because you scoffed at payment.

you who practice ritual sex under the oaks and every green tree, who slaughter children near the streams under the rocky overhangs.Among the smooth stones of the stream are the idols you love; they, they are the object of your devotion. You pour out liquid offerings to them, you make an offering. Because of these things I will seek vengeance.On every high, elevated hill you prepare your bed; you go up there to offer sacrifices.

You, however, the LORD has selected and brought from Egypt, that iron- smelting furnace, to be his special people as you are today.

Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore, I am commanding you to do this thing today.
