Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”And the Lord replied,“ If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”Then Abraham spoke again.“ Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.Suppose there are only forty five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And the Lord said,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty five righteous people there.”Then Abraham pressed his request further.“ Suppose there are only forty?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”“ Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded.“ Let me speak— suppose only thirty righteous people are found?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”Then Abraham said,“ Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue— suppose there are only twenty?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”Finally, Abraham said,“ Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures:‘ They hated me without cause.’

The people say,“ Our wickedness has caught up with us, Lord, but help us for the sake of your own reputation. We have turned away from you and sinned against you again and again.O Hope of Israel, our Savior in times of trouble, why are you like a stranger to us? Why are you like a traveler passing through the land, stopping only for the night?Are you also confused? Is our champion helpless to save us? You are right here among us, Lord. We are known as your people. Please don’t abandon us now!”So this is what the Lord says to his people:“ You love to wander far from me and do not restrain yourselves. Therefore, I will no longer accept you as my people. Now I will remember all your wickedness and will punish you for your sins.”Then the Lord said to me,“ Do not pray for these people anymore.

Then the angel showed me Jeshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord. The Accuser, Satan, was there at the angel’s right hand, making accusations against Jeshua.And the Lord said to Satan,“ I, the Lord, reject your accusations, Satan. Yes, the Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you. This man is like a burning stick that has been snatched from the fire.”

“ Pray no more for these people, Jeremiah. Do not weep or pray for them, for I will not listen to them when they cry out to me in distress.

Jesus said,“ At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?”

Lord, we confess our wickedness and that of our ancestors, too. We all have sinned against you.For the sake of your reputation, Lord, do not abandon us. Do not disgrace your own glorious throne. Please remember us, and do not break your covenant with us.Can any of the worthless foreign gods send us rain? Does it fall from the sky by itself? No, you are the one, O Lord our God! Only you can do such things. So we will wait for you to help us.Then the Lord said to me,“ Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I wouldn’t help them. Away with them! Get them out of my sight!

You would even send an orphan into slavery or sell a friend.

They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves.

They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.

“ Pray no more for these people, Jeremiah. Do not weep or pray for them, and don’t beg me to help them, for I will not listen to you.

“ I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.So now I will pour out my fury on them, consuming them with the fire of my anger. I will heap on their heads the full penalty for all their sins. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”
