“ But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear.

Alas, sinful nation, A people laden with iniquity, A brood of evildoers, Children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have provoked to anger The Holy One of Israel, They have turned away backward.

My people are bent on backsliding from Me. Though they call to the Most High, None at all exalt Him.

“ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.”

Therefore I am full of the fury of the Lord. I am weary of holding it in.“ I will pour it out on the children outside, And on the assembly of young men together; For even the husband shall be taken with the wife, The aged with him who is full of days.

indeed, therefore, I will stretch out My hand against you, and give you as plunder to the nations; I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish from the countries; I will destroy you, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, look, the house of Israel is saying,‘ The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’Therefore say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ None of My words will be postponed any more, but the word which I speak will be done,” says the Lord God.’”

Hear, O earth! Behold, I will certainly bring calamity on this people— The fruit of their thoughts, Because they have not heeded My words Nor My law, but rejected it.

But the word of the Lord was to them,“ Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little,” That they might go and fall backward, and be broken And snared and caught.

Have you not brought this on yourself, In that you have forsaken the Lord your God When He led you in the way?

But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath;For He remembered that they were but flesh, A breath that passes away and does not come again.How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, And grieved Him in the desert!

Why has this people slidden back, Jerusalem, in a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit, They refuse to return.

I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands.

“ And if the prophet is induced to speak anything, I the Lord have induced that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.

“ For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns— broken cisterns that can hold no water.

So the Lord relented concerning this.“ It shall not be,” said the Lord.Thus the Lord GOD showed me: Behold, the Lord GOD called for conflict by fire, and it consumed the great deep and devoured the territory.Then I said:“ O Lord GOD, cease, I pray! Oh, that Jacob may stand, For he is small!”So the Lord relented concerning this.“ This also shall not be,” said the Lord GOD.Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand.And the Lord said to me,“ Amos, what do you see?” And I said,“ A plumb line.” Then the Lord said:“ Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore.

“ For Israel is stubborn Like a stubborn calf; Now the Lord will let them forage Like a lamb in open country.

Then I said,“ I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.

Your own wickedness will correct you, And your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing That you have forsaken the Lord your God, And the fear of Me is not in you,” Says the Lord GOD of hosts.
