当时在以色列全地找不到一个铁匠，因为非利士人说：“恐怕希伯来人制造刀剑或长矛。”所以，以色列人都下到非利士人那里去，磨利他们的锄头、犁头、斧头和铲子。磨锄头、犁头的价钱是三分之二谢克尔，磨草叉、斧头或磨尖刺棒的价钱是三分之一谢克尔。所以到了争战的日子，随同扫罗和约拿单的所有军兵手中都没有刀剑或长矛，只有扫罗和他儿子约拿单有刀枪。
