Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

凡为以色列上帝言语战兢的人，都因被掳归回之人所犯的罪，聚集到我这里来。我惊惶地坐着，直到献晚祭的时候。献晚祭的时候我从愁烦中起来，穿着撕裂的衣服和外袍，双膝跪下，向耶和华—我的上帝举手，

然而你们现在要禁食，哭泣，哀号，一心归向我。这是耶和华说的。你们要撕裂心肠，不要撕裂衣服。归向耶和华—你们的上帝，因为他有恩惠，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，有丰盛的慈爱，并且会改变心意，不降那灾难。谁知道他也许会回心转意，留下余福，就是献给耶和华—你们上帝的素祭和浇酒祭。你们要在锡安吹角，使禁食的日子分别为圣，宣告严肃会。聚集百姓，使会众自洁；召集老年人，聚集孩童和在母怀吃奶的；使新郎出内室，新娘离开洞房。事奉耶和华的祭司要在走廊和祭坛间哭泣，说：“耶和华啊，求你顾惜你的百姓，不要使你的产业受羞辱，在列国中成为笑柄。为何让人在万民中说‘他们的上帝在哪里’呢？”耶和华为自己的地发热心，怜悯他的百姓。

约沙法惧怕，就定意寻求耶和华，在全犹大宣告禁食。

你们要使禁食的日子分别为圣，宣告严肃会，召集长老和这地所有的居民来到耶和华—你们上帝的殿，向耶和华哀求。

尼尼微人就信服上帝，宣告禁食，从最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。这消息传到尼尼微王那里，他就从宝座起来，脱下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，说：“王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可尝任何东西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人与牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告上帝。各人要回转离开恶道，离弃自己掌中的残暴。谁知道上帝也许会回心转意，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡。”上帝察看他们的行为，见他们离开恶道，上帝就改变心意，原先所说要降与他们的灾难，他不降了。

他们就聚集在米斯巴，打水浇在耶和华面前。当日他们禁食，说：“我们得罪了耶和华。”撒母耳在米斯巴作以色列人的士师。
