For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.

You set Israel free from Midian long ago. In the same way, you will break the heavy yoke that weighs Israel down. You will break the wooden beams that are on their shoulders. You will break the rods of those who strike them down.

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.

I will break Assyria in my land, I will trample them underfoot on my hills. Their yoke will be removed from my people, the burden will be lifted from their shoulders.

The LORD who commands armies is about to beat them with a whip, similar to the way he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will use his staff against the sea, lifting it up as he did in Egypt.At that time the LORD will remove their burden from your shoulders, and their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be taken off because your neck will be too large.

And now, I will break Assyria’s yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you.”

You will be reestablished when I vindicate you. You will not experience oppression; indeed, you will not be afraid. You will not be terrified, for nothing frightening will come near you.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their armies. There were about fifteen thousand survivors from the army of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand sword-wielding soldiers had been killed.Gideon went up the road of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and ambushed the surprised army.When Zebah and Zalmunna ran away, Gideon chased them and captured the two Midianite kings, Zebah and Zalmunna. He had surprised their entire army.

When the time for them to be rescued comes,” says the LORD who rules over all,“ I will rescue you from foreign subjugation. I will deliver you from captivity. Foreigners will then no longer subjugate them.

Indeed, the LORD’s shout will shatter Assyria; he will beat them with a club.Every blow from his punishing cudgel, with which the LORD will beat them, will be accompanied by music from the tambourine and harp, and he will attack them with his weapons.

When the LORD gives you relief from your suffering and anxiety, and from the hard labor which you were made to perform,you will taunt the king of Babylon with these words:“ Look how the oppressor has met his end! Hostility has ceased!The LORD has broken the club of the wicked, the scepter of rulers.

I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh; they will get drunk on their own blood, as if it were wine. Then all humankind will recognize that I am the LORD, your deliverer, your protector, the powerful ruler of Jacob.”

Indeed, the scepter of a wicked king will not settle upon the allotted land of the godly. Otherwise the godly might do what is wrong.

I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from being their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and caused you to walk upright.

You will live by your sword but you will serve your brother. When you grow restless, you will tear off his yoke from your neck.”

Do to them as you did to Midian– as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River!They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna,

The Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD turned them over to Midian for seven years.The Midianites overwhelmed Israel. Because of Midian the Israelites made shelters for themselves in the hills, as well as caves and strongholds.Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the east would attack them.They invaded the land and devoured its crops all the way to Gaza. They left nothing for the Israelites to eat, and they took away the sheep, oxen, and donkeys.When they invaded with their cattle and tents, they were as thick as locusts. Neither they nor their camels could be counted. They came to devour the land.Israel was so severely weakened by Midian that the Israelites cried out to the LORD for help.

When the three hundred men blew their trumpets, the LORD caused the Midianites to attack one another with their swords throughout the camp. The army fled to Beth Shittah on the way to Zererah. They went to the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.Israelites from Naphtali, Asher, and Manasseh answered the call and chased the Midianites.Now Gideon sent messengers throughout the Ephraimite hill country who announced,“ Go down and head off the Midianites. Take control of the fords of the streams all the way to Beth Barah and the Jordan River.” When all the Ephraimites had assembled, they took control of the fords all the way to Beth Barah and the Jordan River.They captured the two Midianite generals, Oreb and Zeeb. They executed Oreb on the rock of Oreb and Zeeb in the winepress of Zeeb. They chased the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was now on the other side of the Jordan River.

Assyria, the club I use to vent my anger, is as good as dead, a cudgel with which I angrily punish.

I was angry at my people; I defiled my special possession and handed them over to you. You showed them no mercy; you even placed a very heavy burden on old people.

Why do you forget the LORD, who made you, who stretched out the sky and founded the earth? Why do you constantly tremble all day long at the anger of the oppressor, when he makes plans to destroy? Where is the anger of the oppressor?
