The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead he found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.

The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

The vineyard of the Lord who rules over all is the nation of Israel. The people of Judah are the vines he took delight in. He kept looking for them to do what is fair. But all he saw was blood being spilled. He kept looking for them to do what is right. But all he heard were cries of suffering.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!

For the vineyard of the LORD of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah, the plant he delighted in. He expected justice but saw injustice; he expected righteousness but heard cries of despair.

Indeed Israel is the vineyard of the LORD who commands armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got– disobedience! He waited for fairness, but look what he got– cries for help!

You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land.You cleared the ground for us, and we took root and filled the land.Our shade covered the mountains; our branches covered the mighty cedars.We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea; our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River.

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.Don’t just say to each other,‘ We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.

The Lord comes forward to pronounce judgment on the elders and rulers of his people:“ You have ruined Israel, my vineyard. Your houses are filled with things stolen from the poor.

So the Lord will send scabs on her head; the Lord will make beautiful Zion bald.”

“ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another.Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.“ Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing.They made their hearts as hard as stone, so they could not hear the instructions or the messages that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had sent them by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. That is why the Lord of Heaven’s Armies was so angry with them.“ Since they refused to listen when I called to them, I would not listen when they called to me, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.As with a whirlwind, I scattered them among the distant nations, where they lived as strangers. Their land became so desolate that no one even traveled through it. They turned their pleasant land into a desert.”

For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.

No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear him, those who put their hope in his unfailing love.

“ Many rulers have ravaged my vineyard, trampling down the vines and turning all its beauty into a barren wilderness.

Oh, how beautiful you are! How pleasing, my love, how full of delights!

Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Instead, you yourselves are the ones who do wrong and cheat even your fellow believers.Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality,or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people— none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

You are battered from head to foot— covered with bruises, welts, and infected wounds— without any soothing ointments or bandages.

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

Your children will commit themselves to you, O Jerusalem, just as a young man commits himself to his bride. Then God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with the best vines. In the middle he built a watchtower and carved a winepress in the nearby rocks. Then he waited for a harvest of sweet grapes, but the grapes that grew were bitter.

“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law— justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

About this time some of the men and their wives raised a cry of protest against their fellow Jews.They were saying,“ We have such large families. We need more food to survive.”Others said,“ We have mortgaged our fields, vineyards, and homes to get food during the famine.”And others said,“ We have had to borrow money on our fields and vineyards to pay our taxes.We belong to the same family as those who are wealthy, and our children are just like theirs. Yet we must sell our children into slavery just to get enough money to live. We have already sold some of our daughters, and we are helpless to do anything about it, for our fields and vineyards are already mortgaged to others.”

But the Lord said,“ What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!

“ You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.“ You must not exploit a widow or an orphan.If you exploit them in any way and they cry out to me, then I will certainly hear their cry.My anger will blaze against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Then your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.“ If you lend money to any of my people who are in need, do not charge interest as a money lender would.If you take your neighbor’s cloak as security for a loan, you must return it before sunset.This coat may be the only blanket your neighbor has. How can a person sleep without it? If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am merciful.

Do not be mean spirited and refuse someone a loan because the year for canceling debts is close at hand. If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out to the Lord, you will be considered guilty of sin.

He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

Then the Lord told him,“ I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering.

Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God.God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

They cause the poor to cry out, catching God’s attention. He hears the cries of the needy.

“ If my land accuses me and all its furrows cry out together,or if I have stolen its crops or murdered its owners,

that you yourself have planted, this son you have raised for yourself.

“ No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.“ Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
