The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

The vineyard of the Lord who rules over all is the nation of Israel. The people of Judah are the vines he took delight in. He kept looking for them to do what is fair. But all he saw was blood being spilled. He kept looking for them to do what is right. But all he heard were cries of suffering.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!

The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead he found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.

For the vineyard of the LORD of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah, the plant he delighted in. He expected justice but saw injustice; he expected righteousness but heard cries of despair.

Indeed Israel is the vineyard of the LORD who commands armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got– disobedience! He waited for fairness, but look what he got– cries for help!

You have brought a vine out of Egypt; You have cast out the nations, and planted it.You prepared room for it, And caused it to take deep root, And it filled the land.The hills were covered with its shadow, And the mighty cedars with its boughs.She sent out her boughs to the Sea, And her branches to the River.

Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,and do not think to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

The Lord will enter into judgment With the elders of His people And His princes:“ For you have eaten up the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the Lord will uncover their secret parts.”

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts:‘ Execute true justice, Show mercy and compassion Everyone to his brother.Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother.’“ But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear.Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts.“ But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.

“ Many rulers have destroyed My vineyard, They have trodden My portion underfoot; They have made My pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.

How fair and how pleasant you are, O love, with your delights!

And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?

Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

From the sole of the foot even to the head, There is no soundness in it, But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; They have not been closed or bound up, Or soothed with ointment.

Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.

For as a young man marries a virgin, So shall your sons marry you; And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, So shall your God rejoice over you.

The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

He dug it up and cleared out its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, And also made a winepress in it; So He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”There were also some who said,“ We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine.”There were also those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”

And He said,“ What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

“ You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.“ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry;and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.“ If you lend money to any of My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not charge him interest.If you ever take your neighbor’s garment as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down.For that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What will he sleep in? And it will be that when he cries to Me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying,‘ The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you.

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

And the Lord said:“ I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

So that they caused the cry of the poor to come to Him; For He hears the cry of the afflicted.

“ If my land cries out against me, And its furrows weep together;If I have eaten its fruit without money, Or caused its owners to lose their lives;

And the vineyard which Your right hand has planted, And the branch that You made strong for Yourself.

“ Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
