铁匠用工具在炭火上工作，用锤子打造偶像，用有力的膀臂工作；他也会因饥饿而无力，因不喝水而疲乏。木匠拉准绳，用笔画出偶像的样子，用刨子刨成形状，用圆规画出轮廓，把偶像做成人的样式，像人那样的美丽，好住在庙里。他为自己砍伐香柏树；他选取柏树或橡树，让它在树林中茁壮成长；他又栽种松树，让它靠雨水长大；这些树可以给人作燃料。他拿一些来生火取暖，还用来烧火烤饼；他也用这些树制作神像来下拜，制造雕像来膜拜。他用一半的木头烧火，在其上做肉吃；他烤肉、吃饱，又自己取暖，说：“啊哈，我暖和了！我感到火热了。”他用剩下的一半做了一个神像，就是他雕刻的偶像，然后向它俯伏下拜，又向它祷告，说：“求你救我，因为你是我的神。”这样的人不明白，也不领悟，因为耶和华蒙蔽他们的眼使他们不能看见，蒙蔽他们的心使他们不能明悟。他们不反思，也没有知识和聪慧来说：“我用一半的木头烧火，又在火炭上烘饼，烤肉吃。我怎么能用剩下的木头制造可憎之物呢？我怎么能向一块木头膜拜呢？”

是偶像吗？偶像不过是匠人所铸造的——工匠为它镀上金层，为它加工银链。那穷得供奉不起的人，就挑选不会朽坏的木头，为自己寻找巧匠，立起不会摇动的偶像。

“从列国逃脱的人哪，聚集而来，一同近前吧——他们抬着木头雕刻的偶像，向不能拯救人的神祷告，真是无知

各人帮助邻舍，对自己的兄弟说：“要坚强！”匠人鼓励工匠，用锤子打平金属的鼓励用锤子打砧的，论到焊接的说：“焊得好！”他们又用钉子把偶像钉稳，使它不会摇动。

你们一听见号角、竖笛、里拉琴、弦琴、竖琴、风笛和各种乐器的声音，就要向尼布甲尼撒王所立的金像俯伏膜拜；谁不俯伏膜拜，谁就立刻被扔进烈火燃烧的窑中。”因此那时候，所有的民族、国家、语言群体一听见号角、竖笛、里拉琴、弦琴、竖琴和各种乐器的声音，就都向尼布甲尼撒王所立的金像俯伏膜拜。当时，有些迦勒底人前来恶意控告犹太人。他们开口对尼布甲尼撒王说：“愿王万岁！王啊，你曾发出命令：所有听见号角、竖笛、里拉琴、弦琴、竖琴、风笛和各种乐器声音的人，都要向这金像俯伏膜拜；谁不俯伏膜拜，谁就必被扔进烈火燃烧的窑中。有几个你所指派管理巴比伦省事务的犹太人，就是沙德拉克、米沙克、亚伯尼哥；王啊，这些人却不理会你的命令，既不事奉你的神，也不向你所立的金像膜拜！”尼布甲尼撒就勃然大怒，下令把沙德拉克、米沙克、亚伯尼哥带来；于是这些人被带到王面前。尼布甲尼撒开口对他们说：“沙德拉克、米沙克、亚伯尼哥，你们不事奉我的神，也不向我所立的金像膜拜，是真的吗？现在，你们一听见号角、竖笛、里拉琴、弦琴、竖琴、风笛和各种乐器的声音，如果准备向我所造的像俯伏膜拜，那就没有事了；如果不膜拜，你们就立刻被扔进烈火燃烧的窑中。有什么神能从我的手中拯救你们呢？”

所以我们既然是神的后裔，就不应该认为神性是仿佛用人的手艺和心思所雕刻的金、银、石像。
