  • Judges 6:37-39
Look, I am putting a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, and the ground around it is dry, then I will be sure that you will use me to deliver Israel, as you promised.”The LORD did as he asked. When he got up the next morning, he squeezed the fleece, and enough dew dripped from it to fill a bowl.Gideon said to God,“ Please do not get angry at me, when I ask for just one more sign. Please allow me one more test with the fleece. This time make only the fleece dry, while the ground around it is covered with dew.”

He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot. He brought the food to him under the oak tree and presented it to him.God’s messenger said to him,“ Put the meat and unleavened bread on this rock, and pour out the broth.” Gideon did as instructed. The LORD’s messenger touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of his staff. Fire flared up from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened bread. The LORD’s messenger then disappeared. When Gideon realized that it was the LORD’s messenger, he said,“ Oh no! Master, LORD! Hezekiah had said to Isaiah,“ What is the confirming sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the LORD’s temple the day after tomorrow?”Isaiah replied,“ This is your sign from the LORD confirming that the LORD will do what he has said. Do you want the shadow to move ahead ten steps or to go back ten steps?”Hezekiah answered,“ It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps, but not for it to go back ten steps.”Isaiah the prophet called out to the LORD, and the LORD made the shadow go back ten steps on the stairs of Ahaz.At that time Merodach-Baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah was ill.Hezekiah welcomed them and showed them his whole storehouse, with its silver, gold, spices, and high quality olive oil, as well as his armory and everything in his treasuries. Hezekiah showed them everything in his palace and in his whole kingdom.Isaiah the prophet visited King Hezekiah and asked him,“ What did these men say? Where do they come from?” Hezekiah replied,“ They come from the distant land of Babylon.”Isaiah asked,“ What have they seen in your palace?” Hezekiah replied,“ They have seen everything in my palace. I showed them everything in my treasuries.”Isaiah said to Hezekiah,“ Listen to the word of the LORD,‘ Look, a time is coming when everything in your palace and the things your ancestors have accumulated to this day will be carried away to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the LORD.‘ Some of your very own descendants whom you father will be taken away and will be made eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’”Hezekiah said to Isaiah,“ The LORD’s word which you have announced is appropriate.” Then he added,“ At least there will be peace and stability during my lifetime.”The rest of the events of Hezekiah’s reign and all his accomplishments, including how he built a pool and conduit to bring water into the city, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Judah.Hezekiah passed away and his son Manasseh replaced him as king.

“ Ask for a confirming sign from the LORD your God. You can even ask for something miraculous.”But Ahaz responded,“ I don’t want to ask; I don’t want to put the LORD to a test.”So Isaiah replied,“ Pay attention, family of David. Do you consider it too insignificant to try the patience of men? Is that why you are also trying the patience of my God?For this reason the sovereign master himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel.
