Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said,“ The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people who follow me.”

For he says:“ By the strength of my hand I have done it, And by my wisdom, for I am prudent; Also I have removed the boundaries of the people, And have robbed their treasuries; So I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.My hand has found like a nest the riches of the people, And as one gathers eggs that are left, I have gathered all the earth; And there was no one who moved his wing, Nor opened his mouth with even a peep.”

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.Our soul is exceedingly filled With the scorn of those who are at ease, With the contempt of the proud.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright.

So he said,“ If they have come out for peace, take them alive; and if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said,“ What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish— stones that are burned?”Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said,“ Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall.”Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity!Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.

And he took all the gold and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
