“ Now make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I’ll give you two thousand horses if you’re able to supply riders for them!

Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him.And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance.And the Philistine said to David,“ Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

Ben-hadad sent to him and said,“ The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”

For he says:“ By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.”

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.

He said,“ If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria,“ What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?”Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said,“ Yes, what they are building— if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!”Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives.Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.

And he seized all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, also hostages, and he returned to Samaria.
