LORD, you coerced me into being a prophet, and I allowed you to do it. You overcame my resistance and prevailed over me. Now I have become a constant laughingstock. Everyone ridicules me.For whenever I prophesy, I must cry out,“ Violence and destruction are coming!” This message from the LORD has made me an object of continual insults and derision.Sometimes I think,“ I will make no mention of his message. I will not speak as his messenger any more.” But then his message becomes like a fire locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul. I grow weary of trying to hold it in; I cannot contain it.I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying,“ Come on, let’s publicly denounce him!” All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say,“ Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.

You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. You have put to death people who should not die and kept alive those who should not live by your lies to my people, who listen to lies!

“ I will come to you in judgment. I will be quick to testify against those who practice divination, those who commit adultery, those who break promises, and those who exploit workers, widows, and orphans, who refuse to help the immigrant and in this way show they do not fear me,” says the LORD who rules over all.

A deceiver’s methods are evil; he dreams up evil plans to ruin the poor with lies, even when the needy are in the right.

Then some people said,“ Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent this message to King Jeroboam of Israel:“ Amos is conspiring against you in the very heart of the kingdom of Israel! Don’t preach against the family of Isaac!’“ Therefore this is what the LORD says:‘ Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets and your sons and daughters will die violently. Your land will be given to others and you will die in a foreign land. Israel will certainly be carried into exile away from its land.’”

The LORD said,“ Go stand in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple. Speak out to all the people who are coming from the towns of Judah to worship in the LORD’s temple. Tell them everything I command you to tell them. Do not leave out a single word!Maybe they will pay attention and each of them will stop living the evil way they do. If they do that, then I will forgo destroying them as I had intended to do because of the wicked things they have been doing.Tell them that the LORD says,‘ You must obey me! You must live according to the way I have instructed you in my laws.You must pay attention to the exhortations of my servants the prophets. I have sent them to you over and over again. But you have not paid any attention to them.If you do not obey me, then I will do to this temple what I did to Shiloh. And I will make this city an example to be used in curses by people from all the nations on the earth.’”The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah say these things in the LORD’s temple.Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the LORD had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted,“ You deserve to die!

To show partiality is terrible, for a person will transgress over the smallest piece of bread.

When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to ask him hostile questions about many things,plotting against him, to catch him in something he might say.

‘ Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,’ they say excitedly.‘ These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.’Does the family of Jacob say,‘ The LORD’s patience can’t be exhausted– he would never do such things’? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them,

then they said to him,“ Say‘ Shibboleth!’” If he said,“ Sibboleth”( and could not pronounce the word correctly), they grabbed him and executed him right there at the fords of the Jordan. On that day forty-two thousand Ephraimites fell dead.

and said,“ What will you give me to betray him into your hands?” So they set out thirty silver coins for him.
