I will bring distress to Ariel, And she will be a city of grieving and mourning; And she will be like an Ariel to me.

Yet I will besiege Ariel; she will mourn and lament, she will be to me like an altar hearth.

The Lord says,“ Ariel, I will surround you. Jerusalem, I will get ready to attack you. Your people will mourn. They will sing songs of sadness. I will make you like the front of an altar covered with blood.

Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be moaning and lamentation, and she shall be to me like an Ariel.

Yet I will bring disaster upon you, and there will be much weeping and sorrow. For Jerusalem will become what her name Ariel means— an altar covered with blood.

I will oppress Ariel, and there will be mourning and crying, and she will be to me like an Ariel.

Yet I will distress Ariel; There shall be heaviness and sorrow, And it shall be to Me as Ariel.

then will I distress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and lamentation; and she shall be unto me as Ariel.

I will threaten Ariel, and she will mourn intensely and become like an altar hearth before me.

For this reason the anger of the Lord has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them. And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets. Despite all this, His anger is not spent, But His hand is still stretched out.He will also lift up a flag to the distant nation, And whistle for it from the ends of the earth; And behold, it will come with speed swiftly.No one in it is tired or stumbles, No one slumbers or sleeps; Nor is the undergarment at his waist loosened, Nor his sandal strap broken.Its arrows are sharp and all its bows are bent; The hoofs of its horses seem like flint, and its chariot wheels like a storm wind.Its roaring is like a lioness, and it roars like young lions; It growls as it seizes the prey And carries it off with no one to save it.And it will roar against it on that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks across to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; Even the light is darkened by its clouds.

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the secretary, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and reported to him the words of Rabshakeh.

Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is near, Because the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, He has consecrated His guests.“ Then it will come about on the day of the Lord’s sacrifice That I will punish the princes, the king’s sons, And all who clothe themselves with foreign garments.

At evening time, behold, there is terror! Before morning they are gone. This will be the fate of those who plunder us And the lot of those who pillage us.

Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is My indignation,I send it against a godless nation And commission it against the people of My fury To capture spoils and to seize plunder, And to trample them down like mud in the streets.

The Lord has become like an enemy. He has engulfed Israel; He has engulfed all its palaces, He has destroyed its strongholds And caused great mourning and grieving in the daughter of Judah.

Therefore this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, I am going to hand this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it.And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will enter and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses where people have offered incense to Baal on their roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger.For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been doing only evil in My sight since their youth; for the sons of Israel have been only provoking Me to anger by the work of their hands,” declares the Lord.“ Indeed this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My wrath since the day that they built it, even to this day, so that it should be removed from My sight,because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah which they have done to provoke Me to anger— they, their kings, their leaders, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, With the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in midheaven,“ Come, assemble for the great feast of God,so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, both free and slaves, and small and great.”

Yet today he will halt at Nob; He shakes his fist at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

Behold, their brave men cry out in the streets, The ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.The highways are desolate, the traveler has ceased, He has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities, He has no regard for mankind.The land mourns and wastes away, Lebanon is shamed and withers; Sharon is like a desert plain, And Bashan and Carmel lose their foliage.

And they said to him,“ This is what Hezekiah says:‘ This day is a day of distress, rebuke, and humiliation; for children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.

And when Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they fled and left the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the gate between the two walls; and he went out toward the Arabah.But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and they took him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him.

And her gates will lament and mourn, And she will sit deserted on the ground.

Present a parable to the rebellious house and say to them,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Put on the pot, put it on and also pour water into it;Put in it the pieces of meat, Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; Fill it with choice bones.Take the choicest of the flock, And also stack wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also boil its bones in it.”‘ Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ Woe to the bloody city, To the pot in which there is rust And whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, Without making a choice.For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the ground To cover it with dust.So that it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, So that it will not be covered.”Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the wood pile great.Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, Cook the meat thoroughly And mix in the spices, And let the bones be burned up.Then set it empty on its burning coals So that it may be hot And its bronze may glow, And its filthiness may be melted in it, Its rust eliminated.She has wearied Me with work, Yet her great rust has not gone from her; Let her rust be in the fire!In your filthiness is outrageous sin. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have expended My wrath on you.

Behold, the Lord lays the earth waste, devastates it, twists its surface, and scatters its inhabitants.And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the female servant like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the creditor like the debtor.The earth will be completely laid waste and completely plundered, for the Lord has spoken this word.The earth dries up and crumbles away, the mainland dries out and crumbles away, the exalted of the people of the earth dwindle.The earth is also defiled by its inhabitants, for they violated laws, altered statutes, and broke the everlasting covenant.Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer for their guilt. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth decrease in number, and few people are left.The new wine mourns, The vine decays, All the joyful hearted sigh.The joy of tambourines ceases, The noise of revelers stops, The joy of the harp ceases.They do not drink wine with song; Intoxicating drink is bitter to those who drink it.The city of chaos is broken down; Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All joy turns to gloom. The joy of the earth is banished.Desolation is left in the city And the gate is battered to ruins.

“ Now as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord God says:‘ Say to every kind of bird and to every animal of the field:“ Assemble and come, gather from every direction to My sacrifice, which I am going to sacrifice for you as a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel; and you will eat flesh and drink blood.

So I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; I have brought their way upon their heads,” declares the Lord God.
