In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.

當是日雅各家鞏固之城、變為荒寂、與昔以色列族未至之時、山林中所遺之古跡、無以異也。

當是日其鞏固之城將見遺棄、如昔迦南人因以色列人之故、在林中、在山上、所遺棄之城邑、地則荒蕪、

In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.

At that time the strong cities in Israel will be deserted. They will be as they were when the Israelites drove the Canaanites away. They will be like places that are taken over by bushes and weeds. The whole land will become dry and empty.

In that day their strong cities will be like the deserted places of the wooded heights and the hilltops, which they deserted because of the children of Israel, and there will be desolation.

Their largest cities will be like a deserted forest, like the land the Hivites and Amorites abandoned when the Israelites came here so long ago. It will be utterly desolate.

On that day their strong cities will be like the abandoned woods and mountaintops that were abandoned because of the Israelites; there will be desolation.

On that day their strong cities will be like abandoned places in the forest, Or like branches which they abandoned before the sons of Israel; And the land will be a desolation.

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary[ there shall be] even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus[ in] a couch.Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.

Yet the defenced city[ shall be] desolate,[ and] the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.

Though he be fruitful among[ his] brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty[ is] a fading flower, which[ are] on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one,[ which] as a tempest of hail[ and] a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:And the glorious beauty, which[ is] on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower,[ and] as the hasty fruit before the summer; which[ when] he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

And all the people shall know,[ even] Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change[ them into] cedars.Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand[ is] stretched out still.

Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.The earth mourneth[ and] fadeth away, the world languisheth[ and] fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.[ There is] a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,And the LORD have removed men far away, and[ there be] a great forsaking in the midst of the land.But yet in it[ shall be] a tenth, and[ it] shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance[ is] in them, when they cast[ their leaves: so] the holy seed[ shall be] the substance thereof.

Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.

Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon[ her] children.

And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:

And in that day it shall come to pass,[ that] the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.
