Your grand show of power has been brought down to the grave. The noise of your harps has come down here along with your power. Maggots are spread out under you. Worms cover you.

Your might and power were buried with you. The sound of the harp in your palace has ceased. Now maggots are your sheet, and worms your blanket.’

“ And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more—cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, bronze, iron, and marble;cinnamon, spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, slaves, and human lives.The fruit you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them.The merchants of these things, who became rich from her, will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning,saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls;for in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!’ And every shipmaster and every passenger and sailor, and all who make their living by the sea, stood at a distance,and were crying out as they saw the smoke of her burning, saying,‘ What city is like the great city?’And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich from her prosperity, for in one hour she has been laid waste!’

So I will put an end to the sound of your songs, and the sound of your harps will no longer be heard.

You who were full of noise, You tumultuous town, you jubilant city; Your dead were not killed with the sword, Nor did they die in battle.

If I hope for Sheol as my home, I make my bed in the darkness;If I call to the grave,‘ You are my father’; To the maggot,‘ my mother and my sister’;

My mind reels, horror overwhelms me; The twilight I longed for has been turned into trembling for me.They set the table, they spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink;“ Rise up, captains, oil the shields!”

Are you postponing the day of disaster, And would you bring near the seat of violence?Those who lie on beds of ivory, And lounge around on their couches, And eat lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the fattened cattle,Who improvise to the sound of the harp, And like David have composed songs for themselves,Who drink wine from sacred bowls While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils— Yet they have not grieved over the collapse of Joseph.Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles, And the revelry of those who lounge around will come to an end.

And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.

‘ Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and make your bed with the uncircumcised.’They shall fall in the midst of those who are killed by the sword. She is turned over to the sword; they have dragged her and all her hordes away.

“ Then they will go out and look At the corpses of the people Who have rebelled against Me. For their worm will not die And their fire will not be extinguished; And they will be an abhorrence to all mankind.”

They send out their boys like the flock, And their children dance.They sing with the tambourine and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the flute.They spend their days in prosperity, And suddenly they go down to Sheol.Yet they say to God,‘ Go away from us! We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, And what would we gain if we plead with Him?’

Belshazzar the king held a great feast for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinking wine in the presence of the thousand.While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave orders to bring the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives, and his concubines could drink out of them.Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God which was in Jerusalem; and the king and his nobles, his wives, and his concubines drank out of them.They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Dryness and heat snatch away the snow waters, As Sheol snatches those who have sinned.A mother will forget him; The maggot feeds sweetly until he is no longer remembered. And injustice will be broken like a tree.
