They do not know, nor do they understand, for He has smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see, and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend.

When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one sown with seed beside the road.

“ For they are a nation destitute of counsel, And there is no understanding in them.If only they were wise and they understood this; If only they would discern their future!

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper,

Go to the ant, you lazy one, Observe its ways and be wise,

Pay attention, you stupid ones among the people; And when will you understand, foolish ones?

Their banquets are accompanied by lyre and harp, by tambourine and flute, and by wine; But they do not pay attention to the deeds of the Lord, Nor do they consider the work of His hands.

Every person is stupid, devoid of knowledge; Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, For his cast metal images are deceitful, And there is no breath in them.

Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.And in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,‘ You shall keep on listening, but shall not understand; And you shall keep on looking, but shall not perceive;For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their heart, and return, And I would heal them.’

“ For My people are foolish, They do not know Me; They are foolish children And have no understanding. They are skillful at doing evil, But they do not know how to do good.”

For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water,

But they are altogether stupid and foolish; The instruction from idols is nothing but wood!

When its limbs are dry, they are broken off; Women come and make a fire with them, For they are not a people of discernment, Therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them. And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

“ They bend their tongues like their bows; Lies and not truth prevail in the land; For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me,” declares the Lord.“ Let everyone be on guard against his neighbor, And do not trust any brother; Because every brother utterly betrays, And every neighbor goes about as a slanderer.Everyone deceives his neighbor And does not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies; They weary themselves committing wrongdoing.Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit; Through deceit they refuse to know Me,” declares the Lord.
