  • 2 Kings 18 1-2 Kings 20 21
Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel,[ that] Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also[ was] Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. And he did[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor[ any] that were before him.For he clave to the LORD,[ and] departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. And the LORD was with him;[ and] he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.He smote the Philistines,[ even] unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which[ was] the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel,[ that] Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.And at the end of three years they took it:[ even] in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that[ is] the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor[ by] the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant,[ and] all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear[ them], nor do[ them].Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them. And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. And Hezekiah gave[ him] all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house. At that time did Hezekiah cut off[ the gold from] the doors of the temple of the LORD, and[ from] the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which[ is] in the highway of the fuller’s field. And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which[ was] over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder. And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence[ is] this wherein thou trustest?Thou sayest,( but[ they are but] vain words,)[ I have] counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed,[ even] upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so[ is] Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God:[ is] not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them. How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand[ it]: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that[ are] on the wall. But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words?[ hath he] not[ sent me] to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make[ an agreement] with me by a present, and come out to me, and[ then] eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?Where[ are] the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where[ are] the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?Who[ are] they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand? But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not. Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which[ was] over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with[ their] clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh. And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard[ it], that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.And he sent Eliakim, which[ was] over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day[ is] a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and[ there is] not strength to bring forth. It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up[ thy] prayer for the remnant that are left.So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed;[ as] Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which[ were] in Thelasar?Where[ is] the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah? And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest[ between] the cherubims, thou art the God,[ even] thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,And have cast their gods into the fire: for they[ were] no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou[ art] the LORD God,[ even] thou only. Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel,[ That] which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. This[ is] the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee,[ and] laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted[ thy] voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high?[ even] against the Holy[ One] of Israel.By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof,[ and] the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders,[ and into] the forest of his Carmel.I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.Hast thou not heard long ago[ how] I have done it,[ and] of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities[ into] ruinous heaps. Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were[ as] the grass of the field, and[ as] the green herb,[ as] the grass on the housetops, and[ as corn] blasted before it be grown up.But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest. And this[ shall be] a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof. And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD[ of hosts] shall do this. Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake. And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they[ were] all dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead. In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done[ that which is] good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying,Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake. And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid[ it] on the boil, and he recovered. And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What[ shall be] the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.At that time Berodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick. And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and[ all] the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not. Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country,[ even] from Babylon. And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All[ the things] that[ are] in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD.Behold, the days come, that all that[ is] in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good[ is] the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said,[ Is it] not[ good], if peace and truth be in my days? And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into the city,[ are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
  • 2 Kings 15 32-2 Kings 16 20
In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel began Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah to reign.Five and twenty years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name[ was] Jerusha, the daughter of Zadok. And he did[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD: he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done.Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of the LORD.Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did,[ are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah. And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead. In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign.Twenty years old[ was] Ahaz when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and did not[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD his God, like David his father. But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel. And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome[ him].At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day.So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, saying, I[ am] thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent[ it for] a present to the king of Assyria. And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried[ the people of] it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin. And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that[ was] at Damascus: and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof. And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus: so Urijah the priest made[ it] against king Ahaz came from Damascus. And when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered thereon. And he burnt his burnt offering and his meat offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings, upon the altar. And he brought also the brasen altar, which[ was] before the LORD, from the forefront of the house, from between the altar and the house of the LORD, and put it on the north side of the altar. And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the brasen altar shall be for me to enquire[ by].Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that king Ahaz commanded. And king Ahaz cut off the borders of the bases, and removed the laver from off them; and took down the sea from off the brasen oxen that[ were] under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones. And the covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king’s entry without, turned he from the house of the LORD for the king of Assyria. Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did,[ are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

  • 2 Chronicles 26 1-2 Chronicles 32 33
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who[ was] sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah. He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.Sixteen years old[ was] Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also[ was] Jecoliah of Jerusalem. And he did[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did.And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper. And he went forth and warred against the Philistines, and brake down the wall of Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod, and built cities about Ashdod, and among the Philistines. And God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gurbaal, and the Mehunims. And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad[ even] to the entering in of Egypt; for he strengthened[ himself] exceedingly. Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning[ of the wall], and fortified them. Also he built towers in the desert, and digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen[ also], and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry. Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah,[ one] of the king’s captains. The whole number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valour[ were] two thousand and six hundred. And under their hand[ was] an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings[ to cast] stones. And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong. But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to[ his] destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the LORD,[ that were] valiant men:And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him,[ It appertaineth] not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither[ shall it be] for thine honour from the LORD God.Then Uzziah was wroth, and[ had] a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar. And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he[ was] leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him.And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house,[ being] a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son[ was] over the king’s house, judging the people of the land. Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write. So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which[ belonged] to the kings; for they said, He[ is] a leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.Jotham[ was] twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also[ was] Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok. And he did[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did: howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly. He built the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel he built much. Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers. He fought also with the king of the Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third. So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God.Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they[ are] written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.Ahaz[ was] twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim. Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought[ them] to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day,[ which were] all valiant men; because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king’s son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, and Elkanah[ that was] next to the king. And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria. But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name[ was] Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage[ that] reacheth up unto heaven. And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you:[ but are there] not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the LORD[ is] upon you. Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war,And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the LORD[ already], ye intend to add[ more] to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and[ there is] fierce wrath against Israel. So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation. And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria. At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives. The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there. For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the LORD.And Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.For Ahaz took away a portion[ out] of the house of the LORD, and[ out] of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave[ it] unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD: this[ is that] king Ahaz. For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them,[ therefore] will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel. And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem. And in every several city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers. Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they[ are] written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city,[ even] in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.Hezekiah began to reign[ when he was] five and twenty years old, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name[ was] Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. And he did[ that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of the house of the LORD, and repaired them. And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them together into the east street,And said unto them, Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy[ place].For our fathers have trespassed, and done[ that which was] evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the LORD, and turned[ their] backs. Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy[ place] unto the God of Israel.Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to astonishment, and to hissing, as ye see with your eyes. For, lo, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives[ are] in captivity for this. Now[ it is] in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.My sons, be not now negligent: for the LORD hath chosen you to stand before him, to serve him, and that ye should minister unto him, and burn incense. Then the Levites arose, Mahath the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites: and of the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehalelel: and of the Gershonites; Joah the son of Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah:And of the sons of Elizaphan; Shimri, and Jeiel: and of the sons of Asaph; Zechariah, and Mattaniah:And of the sons of Heman; Jehiel, and Shimei: and of the sons of Jeduthun; Shemaiah, and Uzziel. And they gathered their brethren, and sanctified themselves, and came, according to the commandment of the king, by the words of the LORD, to cleanse the house of the LORD.And the priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD, to cleanse[ it], and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD. And the Levites took[ it], to carry[ it] out abroad into the brook Kidron. Now they began on the first[ day] of the first month to sanctify, and on the eighth day of the month came they to the porch of the LORD: so they sanctified the house of the LORD in eight days; and in the sixteenth day of the first month they made an end. Then they went in to Hezekiah the king, and said, We have cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering, with all the vessels thereof, and the shewbread table, with all the vessels thereof. Moreover all the vessels, which king Ahaz in his reign did cast away in his transgression, have we prepared and sanctified, and, behold, they[ are] before the altar of the LORD.Then Hezekiah the king rose early, and gathered the rulers of the city, and went up to the house of the LORD.And they brought seven bullocks, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven he goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom, and for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer[ them] on the altar of the LORD.So they killed the bullocks, and the priests received the blood, and sprinkled[ it] on the altar: likewise, when they had killed the rams, they sprinkled the blood upon the altar: they killed also the lambs, and they sprinkled the blood upon the altar. And they brought forth the he goats[ for] the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them:And the priests killed them, and they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded[ that] the burnt offering and the sin offering[ should be made] for all Israel. And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king’s seer, and Nathan the prophet: for[ so was] the commandment of the LORD by his prophets. And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began[ also] with the trumpets, and with the instruments[ ordained] by David king of Israel. And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded:[ and] all[ this continued] until the burnt offering was finished. And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped. Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped. Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings. And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams,[ and] two hundred lambs: all these[ were] for a burnt offering to the LORD.And the consecrated things[ were] six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep. But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the[ other] priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites[ were] more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests. And also the burnt offerings[ were] in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for[ every] burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order. And Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was[ done] suddenly. And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel. For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month. For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem. And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation. So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done[ it] of a long[ time in such sort] as it was written.
