I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time:[ but] they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto[ that] shame; and[ their] abominations were according as they loved.

上帝曰、昔我得以色列族、如曠野遇葡萄、視爾列祖、如初熟之無花果、然彼往巴力比耳、崇拜可惡之物、我於是痛絕之、與所崇之物無異、

主曰、昔我得以色列族、如葡萄在曠野、視爾列祖、如在無花果樹初熟之果、然彼就巴力毘珥、專心崇拜可恥之物、遂為可憎、與所崇之物無異、

“ When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree. But when they came to Baal Peor, they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved.

The Lord says,“ When I first found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert. When I saw your people of long ago, it was like seeing the early fruit on a fig tree. But then they went to Baal Peor. There they gave themselves to that shameful god named Baal. They became as evil as the god they loved.

Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.

The Lord says,“ O Israel, when I first found you, it was like finding fresh grapes in the desert. When I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the first ripe figs of the season. But then they deserted me for Baal peor, giving themselves to that shameful idol. Soon they became vile, as vile as the god they worshiped.

I discovered Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your ancestors like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, consecrated themselves to Shame, and became abhorrent, like the thing they loved.

I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people[ that] doth not understand shall fall.

For[ according to] the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and[ according to] the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to[ that] shameful thing,[ even] altars to burn incense unto Baal.

Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage:[ there is] no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.

Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land[ that was] not sown.Israel[ was] holiness unto the LORD,[ and] the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.Thus they provoked[ him] to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who[ were] weeping[ before] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw[ it], he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:And he shall have it, and his seed after him,[ even] the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.Now the name of the Israelite that was slain,[ even] that was slain with the Midianitish woman,[ was] Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain[ was] Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he[ was] head over a people,[ and] of a chief house in Midian.And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,Vex the Midianites, and smite them:For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.

Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and[ they brought] of the pomegranates, and of the figs.The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim[ and] publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

And the glorious beauty, which[ is] on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower,[ and] as the hasty fruit before the summer; which[ when] he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

Thus saith the LORD, The people[ which were] left of the sword found grace in the wilderness;[ even] Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.

And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new[ gods that] came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

When Israel[ was] a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things[ is] death.

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love[ to have it] so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and[ how] I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth[ is] mine:And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These[ are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust:[ and] they walked in their own counsels.
