When Ephraim spoke, people trembled; he was exalted in Israel. But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.

In the thirty- eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel. Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty- two years.Ahab the son of Omri did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight above all that were before him.As if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshiped him.He raised up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.Ahab made the Asherah; and Ahab did more yet to provoke Yahweh, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; so death passed to all men, because all sinned.

The men of Ephraim said to him,“ Why have you treated us this way, that you didn’t call us when you went to fight with Midian?” They rebuked him sharply.

These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

“ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.His division, and those who were counted of them, were forty thousand five hundred.“ Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh. The prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.His division, and those who were counted of them, were thirty- two thousand two hundred.

“ Let Yahweh, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in, that the congregation of Yahweh may not be as sheep which have no shepherd.”Yahweh said to Moses,“ Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.Set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and commission him in their sight.You shall give authority to him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may obey.He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Yahweh. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.”Moses did as Yahweh commanded him. He took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as Yahweh spoke by Moses.

The men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah,“ Why did you pass over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house around you with fire!”

He answered,“ I have not troubled Israel; but you, and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken Yahweh’s commandments, and you have followed the Baals.Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

They abandoned all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made molten images for themselves, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal.They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger.Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there, and built Penuel.

The standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies. Elishama the son of Ammihud was over his army.
