When the tribe of Ephraim spoke, the other tribes trembled with fear. Ephraim was honored in Israel. But its people sinned by worshiping Baal. So they were as good as dead.

But you must not eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you do, you will certainly die.”

All those who lift themselves up will be made humble. And those who make themselves humble will be lifted up.”

Ahab became king of Israel. It was in the 38th year that Asa was king of Judah. Ahab ruled over Israel in Samaria for 22 years. He was the son of Omri.Ahab, the son of Omri, did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did more evil things than any of the kings who had ruled before him.He thought it was only a small thing to commit the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Ahab also married Jezebel. She was Ethbaal’s daughter. Ethbaal was king of the people of Sidon. Ahab began to serve the god named Baal and worship him.He set up an altar to honor Baal. He set it up in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria.Ahab also made a pole used to worship the female god named Asherah. He made the Lord very angry. Ahab did more to make him angry than all the kings of Israel had done before him. The Lord is the God of Israel.

There was Hoshea from the tribe of Ephraim. Hoshea was the son of Nun.

Sin entered the world because one man sinned. And death came because of sin. Everyone sinned, so death came to all people.

The men of Ephraim asked Gideon,“ Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you ask us to help you when you went out to fight against Midian?” In anger they challenged Gideon.

Christ’s love controls us. We are sure that one person died for everyone. And so everyone died.

If a person’s heart is proud, they will be destroyed. So don’t be proud if you want to be honored.

Didn’t I make everything by my power? That is how all things were created,” announces the Lord.“ The people I value are not proud. They are sorry for the wrong things they have done. They have great respect for what I say.

Those are the men Moses sent to check out the land. He gave the name Joshua to Hoshea, the son of Nun.

Samuel said,“ There was a time when you didn’t think you were important. But you became the leader of the tribes of Israel. The Lord anointed you to be king over Israel.

The groups of the camp of Ephraim will be on the west side. They will be under their flag. The leader of the tribe of Ephraim is Elishama, the son of Ammihud.There are 40,500 men in Elishama’s group.The tribe of Manasseh will be next to them. The leader of the tribe of Manasseh is Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur.There are 32,200 men in Gamaliel’s group.

“ Lord, you are the God who gives life and breath to all living things. Please put someone in charge of this community.Have that person lead them and take care of them. Then your people won’t be like sheep without a shepherd.”So the Lord said to Moses,“ Joshua, the son of Nun, has the ability to be a wise leader. Get him and place your hand on him.Have him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the whole community. Put him in charge while everyone is watching.Give him some of your authority. Then the whole community of Israel will obey him.Joshua will stand in front of Eleazar the priest. Eleazar will help him make decisions. Eleazar will get help from me by using the Urim. Joshua and the whole community of Israel must not make any move at all unless I command them to.”Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. He got Joshua and had him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the whole community.Then Moses placed his hands on Joshua. And he put him in charge of the people. He did just as the Lord had directed through Moses.

The troops of Ephraim were called out. The troops went across the Jordan River to Zaphon. When they arrived, they said to Jephthah,“ You went to fight against the Ammonites. Why didn’t you ask us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”

“ I haven’t made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied.“ But you and your father’s family have. You have turned away from the Lord’ s commands. You have followed gods that are named Baal.Now send for people from all over Israel. Tell them to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the 450 prophets of the god named Baal. Also bring the 400 prophets of the female god named Asherah. All of them eat at Jezebel’s table.”

They turned away from all the commands of the Lord their God. They made two statues of gods for themselves. The statues were shaped like calves. They made a pole used to worship the female god named Asherah. They bowed down to all the stars. And they worshiped the god named Baal.They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced all kinds of evil magic. They gave up following God’s rules. They did only what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. All these things made him very angry.So the Lord was very angry with Israel. He removed them from his land. Only the tribe of Judah was left.

Jeroboam built up the walls of Shechem. It was in the hill country of Ephraim. Jeroboam made Shechem his home. From there he went out and built up Peniel.

The groups of the camp of Ephraim went next. They marched out under their flag. Elishama was their commander. He was the son of Ammihud.
