When Ephraim spoke, people trembled; he was exalted in Israel. But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.

When the tribe of Ephraim spoke, the other tribes trembled with fear. Ephraim was honored in Israel. But its people sinned by worshiping Baal. So they were as good as dead.

The LORD spoke to Joshua:“ Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they will know that I will be with you just as I was with Moses.

but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Ahab son of Omri became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Judah’s King Asa; Ahab son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years.But Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the LORD’s sight more than all who were before him.Then, as if following the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat were not enough, he married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and then proceeded to serve Baal and bow in worship to him.He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he had built in Samaria.Ahab also made an Asherah pole. Ahab did more to anger the LORD God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

Hoshea son of Nun from the tribe of Ephraim;

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned.

The men of Ephraim said to him,“ Why have you done this to us, not calling us when you went to fight against the Midianites?” And they argued with him violently.

For the love of Christ compels us, since we have reached this conclusion, that one died for all, and therefore all died.

Before his downfall a person’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.

My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being. This is the LORD’s declaration. I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and trembles at my word.

These were the names of the men Moses sent to scout out the land, and Moses renamed Hoshea son of Nun, Joshua.

Samuel continued,“ Although you once considered yourself unimportant, haven’t you become the leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel

Ephraim’s military divisions will camp on the west side under their banner. The leader of the Ephraimites is Elishama son of Ammihud.His military division numbers 40,500.The tribe of Manasseh will be next to it. The leader of the Manassites is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.His military division numbers 32,200.

“ May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all, appoint a man over the communitywho will go out before them and come back in before them, and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the LORD’s community won’t be like sheep without a shepherd.”The LORD replied to Moses,“ Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.Have him stand before the priest Eleazar and the whole community, and commission him in their sight.Confer some of your authority on him so that the entire Israelite community will obey him.He will stand before the priest Eleazar who will consult the LORD for him with the decision of the Urim. He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command.”Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before the priest Eleazar and the entire community,laid his hands on him, and commissioned him, as the LORD had spoken through Moses.

The men of Ephraim were called together and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah,“ Why have you crossed over to fight against the Ammonites but didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house with you in it!”

He replied,“ I have not ruined Israel, but you and your father’s family have, because you have abandoned the LORD’s commands and followed the Baals.Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

They abandoned all the commands of the LORD their God. They made cast images for themselves, two calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed in worship to all the stars in the sky and served Baal.They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire and practiced divination and interpreted omens. They devoted themselves to do what was evil in the LORD’s sight and angered him.Therefore, the LORD was very angry with Israel, and he removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained.

Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built Penuel.

Next the military divisions of the camp of Ephraim’s descendants with their banner set out, and Elishama son of Ammihud was over their divisions.
