At Peniel he struggled with the angel and won. Jacob wept and begged for his blessing. God also met with him at Bethel. He talked with him there.

He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us—

Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.

When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.There above it stood the Lord, and he said:“ I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought,“ Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”He was afraid and said,“ How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.

There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.So Moses thought,“ I will go over and see this strange sight— why the bush does not burn up.”When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush,“ Moses! Moses!” And Moses said,“ Here I am.”“ Do not come any closer,” God said.“ Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.God said to him,“ Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.

Jacob said,“ Please tell me your name.” But he replied,“ Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

“ I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,saying,“ I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

Then Jacob prayed,“ O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me,‘ Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.But you have said,‘ I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the waters on foot— come, let us rejoice in him.

“ After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:‘ I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.“ Then the Lord said to him,‘ Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’“ This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words,‘ Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,“ May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
