He struggled with the angel and overcame him; he wept and begged for his favor. He found him at Bethel and talked with him there—

At Peniel he struggled with the angel and won. Jacob wept and begged for his blessing. God also met with him at Bethel. He talked with him there.

He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us—

Jacob named the place where God spoke with him Bethel.

He reached a certain place where he decided to camp because the sun had gone down. He took one of the stones and placed it near his head. Then he fell asleep in that placeand had a dream. He saw a stairway erected on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. The angels of God were going up and coming down itand the LORD stood at its top. He said,“ I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the ground you are lying on.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using your name and that of your descendants.I am with you! I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you!”Then Jacob woke up and thought,“ Surely the LORD is in this place, but I did not realize it!”He was afraid and said,“ What an awesome place this is! This is nothing else than the house of God! This is the gate of heaven!”Early in the morning Jacob took the stone he had placed near his head and set it up as a sacred stone. Then he poured oil on top of it.He called that place Bethel, although the former name of the town was Luz.

The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. He looked– and the bush was ablaze with fire, but it was not being consumed!So Moses thought,“ I will turn aside to see this amazing sight. Why does the bush not burn up?”When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to look, God called to him from within the bush and said,“ Moses, Moses!” And Moses said,“ Here I am.”God said,“ Do not approach any closer! Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

God appeared to Jacob again after he returned from Paddan Aram and blessed him.God said to him,“ Your name is Jacob, but your name will no longer be called Jacob; Israel will be your name.” So God named him Israel.

Then Jacob asked,“ Please tell me your name.”“ Why do you ask my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.

“ I am about to send my messenger, who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messenger of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming,” says the LORD who rules over all.

Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,saying,“ Surely I will bless you greatly and multiply your descendants abundantly.”And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.For people swear by something greater than themselves, and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute.In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath,so that we who have found refuge in him may find strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us through two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God to lie.

During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.

Then Jacob prayed,“ O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, you said to me,‘ Return to your land and to your relatives and I will make you prosper.’I am not worthy of all the faithful love you have shown your servant. With only my walking stick I crossed the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children.But you said,‘ I will certainly make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand on the seashore, too numerous to count.’”

Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times.

He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. Let us rejoice in him there!

“ After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush.When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and when he approached to investigate, there came the voice of the Lord,‘ I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely.But the Lord said to him,‘ Take the sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.I have certainly seen the suffering of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.’This same Moses they had rejected, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and judge?’ God sent as both ruler and deliverer through the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,“ May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked– the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
