馬能在懸崖上奔馳嗎？牛能在海中耕作嗎？你們卻使公正淪為毒藥，使公義之果變成苦艾。

並從猶大王室中選出一人與他立約，要他效忠。巴比倫王擄去猶大國的重臣，使猶大國臣服於他，無法圖強，只能遵守盟約，以求生存。後來，猶大王背叛了巴比倫王，派使者到埃及請求支援軍隊馬匹。他能成功嗎？他這樣做怎能逃脫懲罰呢？他這樣背約怎能逃脫懲罰呢？「我憑我的永恆起誓，巴比倫王立他做王，他卻棄約背誓，他必死在巴比倫。敵人築起圍攻的土壘和高臺大肆殺戮的時候，法老雖然兵強馬壯，人多勢眾，仍無法幫他抗敵。他起誓降服，卻棄約背誓，所以絕不能逃避後果。因此，主耶和華說，『我憑我的永恆起誓，他既藐視與我所立的誓言，背棄與我所定的約，我必懲罰他。

亞述王撒縵以色攻打以色列，何細亞納貢稱臣。然而，何細亞差遣使者向埃及王梭求援，不再像往年那樣向亞述王進貢。亞述王發現後，把他抓起來囚在獄中。

可是，你們卻如亞當一樣背約，以詭詐待我。

冷漠無情、不願和解、好說讒言、毫無節制、蠻橫兇暴、不愛良善、

愚鈍無知、不守信用、無情無義、毫無憐憫。

你們中間，不論男人或女人，家族或支派，切不可有人背棄我們的上帝耶和華，去祭拜列國的神明，免得你們中間有殘根長出苦毒的果實，

你們要謹慎，以免有人失去上帝的恩典，長出苦毒的根擾亂你們，玷污眾人。

我們悖逆，否認耶和華，離棄我們的上帝，說欺壓、叛逆的話，吐露心中編織的謊言。正義被趕逐，公義不能靠近，真理倒在街上，正直被拒之門外。真理無處可尋，遠離惡事的人反成了獵物。耶和華因正義蕩然無存而不悅。

第三位天使吹號的時候，有一顆好像火炬般燃燒著的巨星從天上墜落在三分之一的江河溪流和水泉裡。這顆星名叫「苦艾」，它使三分之一的水都變苦了，許多人因為喝了這種苦水而死去。

萬軍之耶和華的葡萄園就是以色列，祂所喜愛的葡萄樹就是猶大人。祂希望看到公平，卻只看見殺戮；指望看到公義，卻只聽見冤聲。

我看得出你正因為嫉妒而心裡充滿了苦澀，被罪惡捆綁。」
