These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar.

The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.It was not with our ancestors that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.

You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath,

From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying,“ Obey me.”But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.’”

they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.

Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say“ and to seeds,” meaning many people, but“ and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.

Among all the children she bore there was none to guide her; among all the children she reared there was none to take her by the hand.

Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.

I will take note of you as you pass under my rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.I will purge you of those who revolt and rebel against me. Although I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Then the Lord said:“ I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you.

“‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice,“ Everything the Lord has said we will do.”Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord.Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar.Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded,“ We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went upand saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.And so he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.

He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy;

And the answer will be:“ It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.

The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.

They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them,“ Do not do as they do.”They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal.They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left,

“ People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’And the answer will be:‘ Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’”

And the Lord said to Moses:“ You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.And in that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask,‘ Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant— the Ten Commandments.

“‘ Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.

The Lord himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. The priests are shown no honor, the elders no favor.

‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,

“ Surely God does not reject one who is blameless or strengthen the hands of evildoers.

He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked,“ Do you see anything?”

You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said,‘ These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.”

These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.

But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”

In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.

and brought Israel out from among them His love endures forever.with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever.to him who divided the Red Sea asunder His love endures forever.and brought Israel through the midst of it, His love endures forever.

Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.He said,“ This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”

Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I roused you; there your mother conceived you, there she who was in labor gave you birth.

Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.
