These things may be treated as an allegory, for these women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar.

It will not be like the old covenant that I made with their ancestors when I delivered them from Egypt. For they violated that covenant, even though I was like a faithful husband to them,” says the LORD.

The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.He did not make this covenant with our ancestors but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now.

so that you may enter by oath into the covenant the LORD your God is making with you today.

They did not keep their covenant with God, and they refused to obey his law.They forgot what he had done, the amazing things he had shown them.

Brothers and sisters, I offer an example from everyday life: When a covenant has been ratified, even though it is only a human contract, no one can set it aside or add anything to it.Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture does not say,“ and to the descendants,” referring to many, but“ and to your descendant,” referring to one, who is Christ.What I am saying is this: The law that came four hundred thirty years later does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to invalidate the promise.For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise, but God graciously gave it to Abraham through the promise.Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the descendant to whom the promise had been made. It was administered through angels by an intermediary.

There was no one to lead her among all the children she bore; there was no one to take her by the hand among all the children she raised.

They were unfaithful and acted as treacherously as their ancestors; they were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow.

I will make you pass under the shepherd’s staff, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.I will eliminate from among you the rebels and those who revolt against me. Moses came and told the people all the LORD’s words and all the decisions. All the people answered together,“ We are willing to do all the words that the LORD has said,”and Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. Early in the morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain and arranged twelve standing stones– according to the twelve tribes of Israel.He sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls for peace offerings to the LORD.Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and half of the blood he splashed on the altar.He took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said,“ We are willing to do and obey all that the LORD has spoken.”So Moses took the blood and splashed it on the people and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up,and they saw the God of Israel. Under his feet there was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear like the sky itself.But he did not lay a hand on the leaders of the Israelites, so they saw God, and they ate and they drank.

Yet he brought out his people like sheep; he led them through the wilderness like a flock.He guided them safely along, while the sea covered their enemies.He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this mountainous land which his right hand acquired.

When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy.

Then people will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.

They rejected his rules, the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and the laws he had commanded them to obey. They paid allegiance to worthless idols, and so became worthless to the LORD. They copied the practices of the surrounding nations in blatant disregard of the LORD’s command.They abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God; they made two metal calves and an Asherah pole, bowed down to all the stars in the sky, and worshiped Baal.They passed their sons and daughters through the fire, and practiced divination and omen reading. They committed themselves to doing evil in the sight of the LORD and made him angry.So the LORD was furious with Israel and rejected them; only the tribe of Judah was left.

“‘ People from other nations will pass by this city. They will ask one another,“ Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?”The answer will come back,“ It is because they broke their covenant with the LORD their God and worshiped and served other gods.”

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them.At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time,‘ Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?’But I will certainly hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they will have done by turning to other gods.

For I am the LORD your God, the one who takes hold of your right hand, who says to you,‘ Don’t be afraid, I am helping you.’

The LORD said to Moses,“ Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

“‘ Then I passed by you and watched you, noticing that you had reached the age for love. I spread my cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I swore a solemn oath to you and entered into a marriage covenant with you, declares the sovereign LORD, and you became mine.

The Lord himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. They did not honor the priests; they did not show favor to the elders.ע( Ayin)

‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I lifted you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,

“ Surely, God does not reject a blameless man, nor does he grasp the hand of the evildoers.

He took the blind man by the hand and brought him outside of the village. Then he spit on his eyes, placed his hands on his eyes and asked,“ Do you see anything?”

You led your people like a flock of sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them– they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said,‘ These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”

But in the same way every faithful promise the LORD your God made to you has been realized, it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the LORD will bring on you every judgment until he destroys you from this good land which the LORD your God gave you.If you violate the covenantal laws of the LORD your God which he commanded you to keep, and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, the LORD will be very angry with you and you will disappear quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

( 28:69) These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.

But since you abandoned me and worshiped other gods, I will not deliver you again.Go and cry for help to the gods you have chosen! Let them deliver you from trouble!”

Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times.

When Lot hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters because the LORD had compassion on them. They led them away and placed them outside the city.

Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!” Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand.

So even the first covenant was inaugurated with blood.For when Moses had spoken every command to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats with water and scarlet wool and hyssop and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that God has commanded you to keep.”

Who is this coming up from the desert, leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I aroused you; there your mother conceived you, there she who bore you was in labor of childbirth.

You also do this: You cover the altar of the LORD with tears as you weep and groan, because he no longer pays any attention to the offering nor accepts it favorably from you.
