烏西雅既強盛，就心高氣傲，以致敗壞。他干犯耶和華－他的上帝，進耶和華的殿，要在香壇上燒香。亞撒利雅祭司率領八十名勇敢的耶和華的祭司，跟隨他進去。他們阻止烏西雅王，對他說：「烏西雅啊，給耶和華燒香不是你的事，而是亞倫子孫的事，他們是分別為聖來燒香的祭司。你出聖殿吧！因為你犯了罪，耶和華上帝必不使你得尊榮。」烏西雅發怒，手拿香爐要燒香。他在耶和華殿中香壇旁向眾祭司發怒的時候，他的額頭在眾祭司面前忽然長出痲瘋。亞撒利雅祭司長和眾祭司轉向他，看哪，他的額頭長出痲瘋，就催他離開那裏；他自己也急速出去，因為耶和華降災於他。烏西雅王患痲瘋直到死的那日；他因為染上痲瘋，就住在隔離的行宮裏，與耶和華的殿隔絕。他兒子約坦管理王的家，治理這地的百姓。

那麼，如果百姓藉着利未人的祭司職任能達到完全－因為百姓是在這職分下領受律法的－為甚麼還需要按照麥基洗德的體系另外興起一位祭司，而不按照亞倫的體系呢？

我所揀選的人，他的杖必發芽。我就平息了以色列人向你們所發的怨言，不再達到我這裏。」
