For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished.

因為那由天使宣講之道既這麼確定，以致一切犯法和不聽從的事都當受該受的報應，

要知道，那藉著天使所說的話既然是確定的，連一切過犯和悖逆都受到了應得的報應，

蓋由天使所言若果鞏固、凡干犯不順者、皆受義報、

浸假道藉天使以傳、言出惟行、使諸犯逆、無不遭應得之譴、況吾棄救道、如此之大者、豈能逭乎、

其藉天使所傳之道既確定、凡不順而逆者、皆遭應得之報、

夫以天神所傳之誡命尚且一成不變、有犯必懲；

For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,

Even the message God spoke through angels had to be obeyed. Every time people broke the Law, they were punished. Every time they didn’t obey, they were punished.

For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,

For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment,

For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every violation and act of disobedience received a just punishment,

For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,

For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment,

For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

For if the message spoken through angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty,

For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,

You deliberately disobeyed God’s law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.”

Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people.

For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

‘ Cursed is anyone who does not affirm and obey the terms of these instructions.’ And all the people will reply,‘ Amen.’

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you!

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the Lord your God must die. In this way you will purge the evil from Israel.

He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

So I want to remind you, though you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful.

then the man or woman who has committed such an evil act must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.

“ But those who brazenly violate the Lord’s will, whether native born Israelites or foreigners, have blasphemed the Lord, and they must be cut off from the community.Since they have treated the Lord’s word with contempt and deliberately disobeyed his command, they must be completely cut off and suffer the punishment for their guilt.”One day while the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they discovered a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.The people who found him doing this took him before Moses, Aaron, and the rest of the community.They held him in custody because they did not know what to do with him.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ The man must be put to death! The whole community must stone him outside the camp.”So the whole community took the man outside the camp and stoned him to death, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

“ When you begin living in the towns the Lord your God is giving you, a man or woman among you might do evil in the sight of the Lord your God and violate the covenant.

Moses told them,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Each of you, take your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other. Kill everyone— even your brothers, friends, and neighbors.”The Levites obeyed Moses’ command, and about 3,000 people died that day.

So the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died.

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,“ Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!”

But 14,700 people died in that plague, in addition to those who had died in the affair involving Korah.

Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.So fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the Lord.

But while they were gorging themselves on the meat— while it was still in their mouths— the anger of the Lord blazed against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.

“ You saw for yourself what the Lord did to you at Baal peor. There the Lord your God destroyed everyone who had worshiped Baal, the god of Peor.But all of you who were faithful to the Lord your God are still alive today— every one of you.

Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say,“ The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.

He had hardly finished speaking the words when the ground suddenly split open beneath them.The earth opened its mouth and swallowed the men, along with their households and all their followers who were standing with them, and everything they owned.So they went down alive into the grave, along with all their belongings. The earth closed over them, and they all vanished from among the people of Israel.All the people around them fled when they heard their screams.“ The earth will swallow us, too!” they cried.Then fire blazed forth from the Lord and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.

Now tell them this:‘ As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say.You will all drop dead in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, every one of you who is twenty years old or older and was included in the registration will die.You will not enter and occupy the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.“‘ You said your children would be carried off as plunder. Well, I will bring them safely into the land, and they will enjoy what you have despised.But as for you, you will drop dead in this wilderness.And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness for forty years. In this way, they will pay for your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness.“‘ Because your men explored the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years— a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. Then you will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.’I, the Lord, have spoken! I will certainly do these things to every member of the community who has conspired against me. They will be destroyed here in this wilderness, and here they will die!”The ten men Moses had sent to explore the land— the ones who incited rebellion against the Lord with their bad report—were struck dead with a plague before the Lord.

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.

but not before 24,000 people had died.

Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew. Let my words fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants.

“ Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard the curse to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death.Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin.Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death.

Surrounded by unnumbered thousands of chariots, the Lord came from Mount Sinai into his sanctuary.
