For they heard an awesome trumpet blast and a voice so terrible that they begged God to stop speaking.

號角之音、傳語之聲、聞其聲者、求毋復與之言、

爾所聞者、亦非號角之聲、及令人不堪卒聞之音。當時若輩聞及、皆不寒而慄。

to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,

You haven’t come to a blast from God’s trumpet. You haven’t come to a voice speaking to you. When people heard that voice long ago, they begged it not to say anything more to them.

For this is what you yourselves requested of the Lord your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said,‘ Don’t let us hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore or see this blazing fire, for we will die.’

And the Lord spoke to you from the heart of the fire. You heard the sound of his words but didn’t see his form; there was only a voice.

Then God gave the people all these instructions:“ I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.“ You must not have any other god but me.“ You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.“ You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.“ Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.You have six days each week for your ordinary work,but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.“ Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.“ You must not murder.“ You must not commit adultery.“ You must not steal.“ You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.“ You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.And they said to Moses,“ You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”

They said,‘ Look, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!But now, why should we risk death again? If the Lord our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?Go yourself and listen to what the Lord our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’

Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire— as you did— and survived?

It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves.

And the Lord said to Moses,“ Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.

The Lord did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.At the mountain the Lord spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire.I stood as an intermediary between you and the Lord, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. You must not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.“ The Lord spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled.Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently.As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply.
