Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us,

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

A huge cloud of witnesses is all around us. So let us throw off everything that stands in our way. Let us throw off any sin that holds on to us so tightly. And let us keep on running the race marked out for us.

They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.So I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air.Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.

“ But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.

by holding on to the word of life so that on the day of Christ I will have a reason to boast that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain.

My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like him in his death,and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.Not that I have already attained this– that is, I have not already been perfected– but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me.Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single- minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead,with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

So do not throw away your confidence, because it has great reward.For you need endurance in order to do God’s will and so receive what is promised.For just a little longer and he who is coming will arrive and not delay.But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, I take no pleasure in him.But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls.

You were running well; who prevented you from obeying the truth?

So put to deat h whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry.Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.You also lived your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among them.But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth.

Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.

Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,and endurance, character, and character, hope.And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

So get rid of all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.

You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image– in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that could defile the body and the spirit, and thus accomplish holiness out of reverence for God.

So be patient, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s return. Think of how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the ground and is patient for it until it receives the early and late rains.You also be patient and strengthen your hearts, for the Lord’s return is near.Do not grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be judged. See, the judge stands before the gates!As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name.Think of how we regard as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and you have seen the Lord’s purpose, that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

And do this because we know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers.The night has advanced toward dawn; the day is near. So then we must lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the weapons of light.Let us live decently as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in discord and jealousy.Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to arouse its desires.

And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.

No one in military service gets entangled in matters of everyday life; otherwise he will not please the one who recruited him.

eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality,

because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

But the person who endures to the end will be saved.

And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees?But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with endurance.

As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.

Because you have kept my admonition to endure steadfastly, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come on the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.

“ If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down first and compute the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish the tower, all who see it will begin to make fun of him.They will say,‘ This man began to build and was not able to finish!’Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?If he cannot succeed, he will send a representative while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.

to knowledge, self- control; to self- control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness;

“ I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!”

If anyone is meant for captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, then by the sword he must be killed. This requires steadfast endurance and faith from the saints.

Then he said to them,“ Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.

Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

I, John, your brother and the one who shares with you in the persecution, kingdom, and endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony about Jesus.

“ Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, and he went out without understanding where he was going.By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is God.By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate, because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.So in fact children were fathered by one man– and this one as good as dead– like the number of stars in the sky and like the innumerable grains of sand on the seashore.These all died in faith without receiving the things promised, but they saw them in the distance and welcomed them and acknowledged that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth.For those who speak in such a way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.In fact, if they had been thinking of the land that they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.But as it is, they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He had received the promises, yet he was ready to offer up his only son.God had told him,“ Through Isaac descendants will carry on your name,”and he reasoned that God could even raise him from the dead, and in a sense he received him back from there.By faith also Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future.By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph and worshiped as he leaned on his staff.By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, mentioned the exodus of the sons of Israel and gave instructions about his burial.By faith, when Moses was born, his parents hid him for three months, because they saw the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.By faith, when he grew up, Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,choosing rather to be ill- treated with the people of God than to enjoy sin’s fleeting pleasure.He regarded abuse suffered for Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for his eyes were fixed on the reward.By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s anger, for he persevered as though he could see the one who is invisible.By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the one who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if on dry ground, but when the Egyptians tried it, they were swallowed up.By faith the walls of Jericho fell after the people marched around them for seven days.By faith Rahab the prostitute escaped the destruction of the disobedient, because she welcomed the spies in peace.And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets.Through faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, gained what was promised, shut the mouths of lions,quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, became mighty in battle, put foreign armies to flight,and women received back their dead raised to life. But others were tortured, not accepting release, to obtain resurrection to a better life.And others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.They were stoned, sawed apart, murdered with the sword; they went about in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, ill- treated( the world was not worthy of them); they wandered in deserts and mountains and caves and openings in the earth.

Who are these who float along like a cloud, who fly like doves to their shelters?

( for I have five brothers) to warn them so that they don’t come into this place of torment.’

Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified,“ He told me everything I ever did.”

I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning.

You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud covering the earth. In the latter days I will bring you against my land so that the nations may acknowledge me, when before their eyes I magnify myself through you, O Gog.

Jesus said to another,“ Follow me.” But he replied,“ Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”But Jesus said to him,“ Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”Yet another said,“ I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family.”Jesus said to him,“ No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

You will advance; you will come like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the earth, you, all your troops, and the many other peoples with you.

( For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
