Some were made fun of and even whipped. Some were held by chains. Some were put in prison.

They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,“ My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite,“ Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah,“ Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard. (niv)

When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.Then Peter came to himself and said,“ Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed,“ Peter is at the door!”“ You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said,“ It must be his angel.”But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison.“ Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross- examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. (niv)

We are all here!”The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.He then brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They replied,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved— you and your household.”Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God— he and his whole household.When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order:“ Release those men.”The jailer told Paul,“ The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”But Paul said to the officers:“ They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them.
