“ What makes you think I want all your sacrifices?” says the Lord.“ I am sick of your burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle. I get no pleasure from the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.When you come to worship me, who asked you to parade through my courts with all your ceremony?Stop bringing me your meaningless gifts; the incense of your offerings disgusts me! As for your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath and your special days for fasting— they are all sinful and false. I want no more of your pious meetings.I hate your new moon celebrations and your annual festivals. They are a burden to me. I cannot stand them!When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look. Though you offer many prayers, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims.

Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins.

What can we bring to the Lord? Should we bring him burnt offerings? Should we bow before God Most High with offerings of yearling calves?Should we offer him thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for our sins?No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

And this is my covenant with them, that I will take away their sins.”

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him.

This is an illustration pointing to the present time. For the gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them.

And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.”

First, Christ said,“ You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them”( though they are required by the law of Moses).

Bring your confessions, and return to the Lord. Say to him,“ Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us, so that we may offer you our praises.

“ I hate all your show and pretense— the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies.I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings.

With his own blood— not the blood of goats and calves— he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity.

You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering.

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.

This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says:“ Take your burnt offerings and your other sacrifices and eat them yourselves!When I led your ancestors out of Egypt, it was not burnt offerings and sacrifices I wanted from them.

There’s no use offering me sweet frankincense from Sheba. Keep your fragrant calamus imported from distant lands! I will not accept your burnt offerings. Your sacrifices have no pleasing aroma for me.”

But those who choose their own ways— delighting in their detestable sins— will not have their offerings accepted. When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb, it’s as though they had sacrificed a dog! When they bring an offering of grain, they might as well offer the blood of a pig. When they burn frankincense, it’s as if they had blessed an idol.

I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly offer.But I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens.For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills.I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine.If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it.
