“ Wine makes the Babylonians do foolish things. They are proud. They never rest. Like the grave, they are always hungry for more. Like death, they are never satisfied. They gather all the nations to themselves. They take all those people away as prisoners.

Wealth is treacherous, and the arrogant are never at rest. They open their mouths as wide as the grave, and like death, they are never satisfied. In their greed they have gathered up many nations and swallowed many peoples.

You thoroughly defeated Edom and it has gone to your head! Gloat over your success, but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? Why bring down yourself and Judah along with you?”

The one who loves money will never be satisfied with money, he who loves wealth will never be satisfied with his income. This also is futile.

King Belshazzar prepared a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinking wine in front of them all.While under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar issued an order to bring in the gold and silver vessels– the ones that Nebuchadnezzar his father had confiscated from the temple in Jerusalem– so that the king and his nobles, together with his wives and his concubines, could drink from them.So they brought the gold and silver vessels that had been confiscated from the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, together with his wives and concubines, drank from them.As they drank wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has dullness of the eyes?Those who linger over wine, those who go looking for mixed wine.Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.Afterward it bites like a snake, and stings like a viper.Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will speak perverse things.

Those who get up early to drink beer are as good as dead, those who keep drinking long after dark until they are intoxicated with wine.They have stringed instruments, tambourines, flutes, and wine at their parties. So they do not recognize what the LORD is doing, they do not perceive what he is bringing about.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to crave strong drink,lest they drink and forget what is decreed, and remove from all the poor their legal rights.

Though the LORD is exalted, he takes note of the lowly, and recognizes the proud from far away.

So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand. I made all the nations to whom he sent me drink the wine of his wrath.I made Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and its officials drink it. I did it so Judah would become a ruin. I did it so Judah, its kings, and its officials would become an object of horror and of hissing scorn, an example used in curses. Such is already becoming the case!I made all of these other people drink it: Pharaoh, king of Egypt; his attendants, his officials, his people,the foreigners living in Egypt; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines, the people of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, the people who had been left alive from Ashdod;all the people of Edom, Moab, Ammon;all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon; all the kings of the coastlands along the sea;the people of Dedan, Tema, Buz, all the desert people who cut their hair short at the temples;all the kings of Arabia who live in the desert;all the kings of Zimri; all the kings of Elam; all the kings of Media;all the kings of the north, whether near or far from one another; and all the other kingdoms which are on the face of the earth. After all of them have drunk the wine of the LORD’s wrath, the king of Babylon must drink it.Then the LORD said to me,“ Tell them that the LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,‘ Drink this cup until you get drunk and vomit. Drink until you fall down and can’t get up. For I will send wars sweeping through you.’If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it, tell them that the LORD who rules over all says‘ You most certainly must drink it!For take note, I am already beginning to bring disaster on the city that I call my own. So how can you possibly avoid being punished? You will not go unpunished! For I am proclaiming war against all who live on the earth. I, the LORD who rules over all, affirm it!’

Those who are champions at drinking wine are as good as dead, who display great courage when mixing strong drinks.They pronounce the guilty innocent for a payoff, they ignore the just cause of the innocent.

Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time.Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble.

But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,“ God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”

to aspire to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own business, and to work with your hands, as we commanded you.

But you have not glorified the God who has in his control your very breath and all your ways!

There is a generation whose eyes are so lofty, and whose eyelids are lifted up disdainfully.There is a generation whose teeth are like swords and whose molars are like knives to devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among the human race.The leech has two daughters:“ Give! Give!” There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say,“ Enough”–the grave, the barren womb, land that is not satisfied with water, and fire that never says,“ Enough!”

Those who see you stare at you, they look at you carefully, thinking:“ Is this the man who shook the earth, the one who made kingdoms tremble?Is this the one who made the world like a desert, who ruined its cities, and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?”’

“ Call for archers to come against Babylon! Summon against her all who draw the bow! Set up camp all around the city! Do not allow anyone to escape! Pay her back for what she has done. Do to her what she has done to others. For she has proudly defied me, the Holy One of Israel.

So I, the LORD, affirm that I will send for all the peoples of the north and my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Samaria like Damascus?I overpowered kingdoms ruled by idols, whose carved images were more impressive than Jerusalem’s or Samaria’s.As I have done to Samaria and its idols, so I will do to Jerusalem and its idols.”But when the sovereign master finishes judging Mount Zion and Jerusalem, then I will punish the king of Assyria for what he has proudly planned and for the arrogant attitude he displays.For he says:“ By my strong hand I have accomplished this, by my strategy that I devised. I invaded the territory of nations, and looted their storehouses. Like a mighty conqueror, I brought down rulers.

When their appetites are all stirred up, I will set out a banquet for them. I will make them drunk so that they will pass out, they will fall asleep forever, they will never wake up,” says the LORD.

Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion, but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.

We have heard about Moab’s pride, their great arrogance, their boasting, pride, and excess. But their boastful claims are empty!

Arrange the table, lay out the carpet, eat and drink! Get up, you officers, smear oil on the shields!

Those who accumulate houses are as good as dead, those who also accumulate landed property until there is no land left, and you are the only landowners remaining within the land.

Proud men will be brought low, arrogant men will be humiliated; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.Indeed, the LORD who commands armies has planned a day of judgment, for all the high and mighty, for all who are proud– they will be humiliated;

Because you robbed many countries, all who are left among the nations will rob you. You have shed human blood and committed violent acts against lands, cities, and those who live in them.The one who builds his house by unjust gain is as good as dead. He does this so he can build his nest way up high and escape the clutches of disaster.Your schemes will bring shame to your house. Because you destroyed many nations, you will self-destruct.
