The local residents, the Canaanites, watched them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad. Then they renamed that place( which is near the Jordan) Abel mizraim, for they said,“ This is a place of deep mourning for these Egyptians.”

When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said,“ The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.

The Canaanites living in that area saw how sad all of them were. They said,“ The Egyptians are having a very special service for the dead.” That’s why that place near the Jordan River is called Abel of the Egyptians.

When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said,“ This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim; it is beyond the Jordan.

“ No!” Abraham responded.“ Be careful never to take my son there.

Canaan’s oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites,Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. The Canaanite clans eventually spread out,and the territory of Canaan extended from Sidon in the north to Gerar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha.

The five gold rats represented the five Philistine towns and their surrounding villages, which were controlled by the five rulers. The large rock at Beth shemesh, where they set the Ark of the Lord, still stands in the field of Joshua as a witness to what happened there.

Afterward Jacob said to Simeon and Levi,“ You have ruined me! You’ve made me stink among all the people of this land— among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few that they will join forces and crush us. I will be ruined, and my entire household will be wiped out!”

So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot.( At that time Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land.)

( These two mountains are west of the Jordan River in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Jordan Valley, near the town of Gilgal, not far from the oaks of Moreh.)

But go up to Pisgah Peak, and look over the land in every direction. Take a good look, but you may not cross the Jordan River.

When they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan River, they held a very great and solemn memorial service, with a seven day period of mourning for Joseph’s father.
