後來埃及和迦南全地遭遇饑荒、大災難，我們的祖先找不到糧食。

誰是智慧人可以解明這事？耶和華的口向誰說過，以致他可以傳講這事？為甚麼這地被毀壞，像曠野般荒涼，無人經過呢？

接著又必有七年饑荒；甚至埃及地所有的豐收都被人忘記了，饑荒必把這地毀滅。因為接著而來的饑荒太嚴重了，使人不覺得這地有過豐收。

田野荒廢，土地淒涼，因為五穀毀壞，新酒乾竭，油也缺乏。農夫啊！你們要為大麥和小麥羞愧。修理葡萄園的啊！你們要哀號，因為田間的莊稼都破壞了。葡萄樹枯乾，無花果樹衰殘；石榴樹、棕樹、蘋果樹，田野所有的樹木都枯乾，因此歡樂從人間消失了。

亞哈對俄巴底說：“你走遍這地，到所有的水泉和溪水那裡去看看，也許我們可以找到青草，使騾馬能夠生存，免得牲畜滅絕。”

夜裡每到交更的時分，你要起來呼喊；在主面前你要傾心如水！你的孩童在各街頭上因飢餓而昏倒，你要為他們的性命向主舉手禱告。“耶和華啊，求你觀看！求你鑒察！你曾這樣對待過誰呢？難道婦人應該吃掉自己所生的，就是自己所撫養的嬰孩嗎？難道祭司和先知應該在主的聖所裡被殺害嗎？”

那些死於刀下的比餓死的還好；餓死的因缺乏田間的出產，就日漸消瘦而死亡。

耶和華的話臨到耶利米，是關於旱災的事：“猶大悲哀，她的城鎮（“城鎮”原文作“城門”）衰落，人人都坐在地上悲傷痛哭；耶路撒冷的哀聲上達於天。他們的顯貴差派童僕去打水；童僕來到池邊，卻找不到水，就拿著空的器皿回來；他們失望難過，蒙著自己的頭。土地乾裂，因為地上沒有雨水；農夫失望，都蒙著自己的頭。甚至母鹿在田野生產了小鹿，也得把牠丟棄，因為沒有青草。野驢站在光禿的高岡上，像野狗喘著氣；牠們雙目發呆，因為沒有青草。”
