他認出來，就說：「這是我兒子的外衣，惡獸把他吃了，約瑟一定被撕碎了！」

他們的父親雅各對他們說：「你們害我喪失了我的兒子：約瑟不在了，西緬也不在了，你們還要帶走便雅憫！這些事都臨到我身上了。」

雅各說：「我的兒子不可與你們一同下去。他哥哥死了，只剩下他。他若在你們行走的路上遭難，你們就害我白髮蒼蒼、悲悲慘慘下陰間去了。」

以色列對約瑟說：「你哥哥們不是在示劍放羊嗎？來，我派你到他們那裏去。」約瑟對他說：「我在這裏。」以色列對他說：「你去看看你哥哥們是否平安，羊羣是否平安，再回來告訴我。」於是他派約瑟出希伯崙谷，約瑟就往示劍去了。
