Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work Among this people, A marvelous work and a wonder; For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.”

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

And when they say to you,“ Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?

‘ Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.

I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. So the king spoke, and said,“ Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered and said,“ My Lord, may the dream concern those who hate you, and its interpretation concern your enemies!

Now the magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man and beast.Then the magicians said to Pharaoh,“ This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had said.

“ When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.

Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said,“ What does this babbler want to say?” Others said,“ He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst; I will destroy their counsel, And they will consult the idols and the charmers, The mediums and the sorcerers.

“ This is the end of the account. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly troubled me, and my countenance changed; but I kept the matter in my heart.”

And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.

Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said,“ The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king.But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, were these:

And I, Daniel, fainted and was sick for days; afterward I arose and went about the king’s business. I was astonished by the vision, but no one understood it.

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written,“ He catches the wise in their own craftiness”;and again,“ The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him.Then the king gave the command to call the magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.And the king said to them,“ I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to know the dream.”Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic,“ O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”The king answered and said to the Chaldeans,“ My decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made an ash heap.However, if you tell the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor. Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation.”They answered again and said,“ Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will give its interpretation.”The king answered and said,“ I know for certain that you would gain time, because you see that my decision is firm:if you do not make known the dream to me, there is only one decree for you! For you have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the time has changed. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can give me its interpretation.”The Chaldeans answered the king, and said,“ There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, Lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean.It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

For it is written:“ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were sad.

When I heard, my body trembled; My lips quivered at the voice; Rottenness entered my bones; And I trembled in myself, That I might rest in the day of trouble. When he comes up to the people, He will invade them with his troops.

Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other.The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise men of Babylon,“ Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”Now all the king’s wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation.

There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father— your father the king— made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers.

Surely the princes of Zoan are fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give foolish counsel. How do you say to Pharaoh,“ I am the son of the wise, The son of ancient kings?”Where are they? Where are your wise men? Let them tell you now, And let them know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.The princes of Zoan have become fools; The princes of Noph are deceived; They have also deluded Egypt, Those who are the mainstay of its tribes.

“ Stand now with your enchantments And the multitude of your sorceries, In which you have labored from your youth— Perhaps you will be able to profit, Perhaps you will prevail.You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you From what shall come upon you.

And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.

‘ And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.

He frustrates the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot carry out their plans.He catches the wise in their own craftiness, And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.

The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant.

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.

And they said to him,“ We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” So Joseph said to them,“ Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”
