耶和華對雅各說：「你當回到你祖先之地，回到你的本族，我必與你同在。」

雅各說：「我祖父亞伯拉罕的神，我父親以撒的神耶和華啊，你曾對我說：『回到你的本土本族，我必厚待你。』

他做了一個夢：看哪，有一個梯子矗立在地，它的頂端直通到天！看哪，梯子上，神的使者們上下往來！看哪，耶和華站在梯子上方，說：「我是耶和華，你父親亞伯拉罕的神、以撒的神。我必把你現在躺臥之地，賜給你和你的後裔。你的後裔必如同地上的塵土；你必向東南西北擴展；地上萬族都必因你和你的後裔而蒙福。看哪，我與你同在！你無論往哪裡去，我都會保守你，並且要把你帶回這地。我必不離棄你，直到成就了我對你所說的。」雅各從睡眠中醒過來，說：「耶和華確實在這地方，我竟然不知道！」他就害怕起來，說：「這地方真可畏！這裡一定是神的殿，天的門。」雅各清早起來，拿起放在他頭底下的那塊石頭，立作柱子，在它上頭澆了油。他就給那地方起名為伯特利；不過那城先前名叫路斯。然後雅各許了一個願說：「如果耶和華與我同在，在我所行的這路上保守我，又賜給我糧食吃、衣服穿，並讓我平平安安地回到我的父家，那麼耶和華就是我的神。我立作柱子的這塊石頭將成為神的殿；凡你所賜給我的，我必把十分之一獻給你。」

他在那裡築了一座祭壇，稱那地方為伊利-伯特利，因為他逃避他哥哥的時候，神曾在那裡向他顯現。
