亞伯拉罕從那裡起程去南地，住在加低斯和書珥之間。後來他寄居在基拉耳。

就在那一天，耶和華與亞伯蘭立約，說：「我已經把這地賜給你的後裔，從埃及河直到幼發拉底大河，

說：「耶和華宣告：我指著自己起誓，你既然做了這事，沒有留下你的兒子，就是你的獨生子，我必定大大祝福你，使你的後裔大大增多，如同天上的星辰、海邊的沙粒；你的後裔必占有仇敵的城門。地上萬國都必因你的後裔而蒙福，因為你聽從了我的話。」

就是他與亞伯拉罕所立的約，向以撒所起的誓；

因著信，他做為外人客居在應許之地，住在帳幕裡，與同一個應許的共同繼承人以撒、雅各一樣，

起來，縱橫走遍這地！要知道，我要把這地賜給你。」

這些人都懷著信仰死去，沒有得到那些所應許的，卻遠遠地看見並且歡迎它們，又承認自己在地上是異鄉人，是寄居的。實際上，說這樣話的人，是表明他們在尋求一個家鄉。如果他們真是想念自己所離開的地方，他們還有機會回去；但如今，他們所嚮往的是一個更美好的，就是在天上的家鄉。因此，神被稱為「他們的神」並不以為恥；原來他已經為他們預備了一座城。

耶和華對亞伯蘭說：「你當離開你的本土、本族、父家，往我將要指示你的地去。我要使你成為一個大國，我要祝福你，使你的名為大；你也必成為別人的祝福！

不要因作惡者而心懷不平，也不要嫉妒那行不義的人，因為他們就像青草快被割掉，也像青綠的嫩草即將衰敗。你要依靠耶和華，要行善事，在地上安居，並要以信實為糧；你要以耶和華為樂，他就把你心裡所求的賜給你。當把你的道路交託耶和華；當依靠他，他就成全；他將使你的公義如光發出，使你的公正明如正午。

他擁有羊群、牛群和許多僕婢，非利士人就嫉妒他。

我必把你現在的寄居之地，就是迦南全地，賜給你和你的後裔作永遠的產業；我也必作他們的神。」

為此，神想要對那些繼承應許的人格外表明他的計劃是不能更改的，就用所起的誓來保證。

我要使你明達，指示你當走的道路；我要指教你，我的目光在你身上。

耶和華與約瑟同在，他就成為事事順利的人。他住在他埃及主人的家中。

耶和華啊，求你垂聽我的禱告，傾聽我的呼求！我流淚時，求你不要沉默！因為我在你面前是寄居的，是客旅，像我所有的祖先那樣。

然而，耶和華與約瑟同在，向他施慈愛，使他在監獄長的眼前蒙恩。

以撒在那地耕種，那一年收穫百倍；耶和華祝福了他，

你從水中經過，我必與你同在；你渡過河流，水必不漫過你；你在火中行走，必不被燒灼，火焰也燒不著你。

凡是你們在我身上所學到的、所領受的、所聽到的、所看到的，這些事你們就當實行。這樣，賜平安的神就會與你們同在。

你不要害怕，因為我與你同在。從東方，我必帶來你的後裔；從西方，我必招聚你；
